Wolverine basketball team will begin play on Dec. 1

Weiser High School boys basketball concluded tryouts on Friday and Saturday with 40 boys trying out for the Wolverine teams. Head Coach Brad Adolfson is looking forward to a tough but fun season.
After losing 11 seniors to graduation, the varsity team only returns one player with significant experience.
Brett Spencer  is a returning All-SRV second team member.  He will be joined by Sam Kerner, Eli Ruiz, Ray Calley, Willy Shirts,Tyler Pope who all saw a little varsity action last year. In addition, sophomores Levi Estes, Brayden Walker and Michael Youngberg also look to fight their way into the mix of things.
Adolfson said that getting ready for the 2020 season has been interesting. Student-athletes had the opportunity to sign up for individual workouts during the fall and a couple of players took advantage of that. The team also  had open gyms the last four weeks to give kids an opportunity to get into the gym together.
Adolfson said that the focus for the upcoming season at the varsity level will be on team defense and rebounding.
“We are undersized and will be smaller than just about every team on our schedule, so our kids will have to put an emphasis on these details to be successful,” Adolfson said.
The Wolverines will have a challenge right from the beginning with the pre-season games. The pre-season schedule is as tough as any that Adolfson has had in any of his eight years  at WHS.
The Wolverines will  have at least six games against 4A SIC schools along with a very tough Melba squad to start the season. Adolfson said he believes that this scheduling will make the team tougher when they get to SRV competition in January.
They will need to grow to be ready for the conference season.  The SRV year in and year out is one of the toughest 3A leagues in the state.
“We have to be ready each and every night we step on the floor,” Adolfson said.
Adolfson said that the thing he is most looking forward to is just coaching the team. The team has great character and they share the basketball so well as a team.  They are  fun to watch.
Adolfson said the team will have to shoot the ball to be successful, while he is sure there will be nights where the shots do not fall, Adolfson knows the team will always bring the fun.
As far as COVID-19 regulations, Adolfson said that the  Wolverines are going to do whatever they have to do to try and get a season in. The coaches are going to coach and players are going to play and they will follow any of the rules recommended by the administration. Whether or not they will be able to allow fans later in the season will be handled by the administration.
Working with Adolfson is the same coaching staff  as last year.
Adolfson will be assisted by Bruce Winegar and Gary Jensen. Head junior varsity coach will be  Berto Reyes and head frosh/soph coach will be Chris Schultz who will be assisted by Trey Jensen.
