Weiser wrestling coach earns 200th win against Homedale

On Wednesday, Jan. 22, Weiser wrestling celebrated a milestone. The conference dual against Homedale was coach Drew Dickerson’s 200th dual win at Weiser High School.
Weiser wrestling fans had been planning for the day for quite a while, inviting former wrestlers who Dickerson coached to the event and planning an after dual celebration.
Dickerson was born and raised in Weiser, wrestled at Weiser High School and then attended Missouri Valley College, wrestling and earning his teaching credential.
He has been coaching the Wolverine wrestlers for over a decade and has mentored many athletes to not only go on and wrestle at college, but to become good men and members of the community.
The appreciation shown for Dickerson was second to none. The Tom Falash Gymnasium was full of supporters for the event and the Weiser High School varsity wrestling team didn’t disappoint.
Weiser didn’t allow the Homedale Trojans to score at all ending in a score of 82-0. Weiser received wins by forfeit seven times against the Trojans, once again showing that Weiser has a lot of depth on this wrestling squad. Even in the exhibition matches, Weiser showed their prowess, winning each of them by fall.
“This was an awesome night,” Dickerson said. “I was excited to see the boys wrestle tough and get some wins tonight, but it was also a great night, because of the support in the stands and especially from some of my former wrestlers and my family.”
At the end of the night, after the win was recorded, Rod Walker gave a speech while athletic director Tyler Grant gave Dickerson a plaque in honor of his accomplishment.
 Individual results against Homedale were:
120 lbs.: Conor Marsh won by forfeit.
126 lbs.: Kooper von Brethorst won by fall.
132 lbs.: Ander Barbot won by decision.
138 lbs: Braden Edwards won by forfeit.
145 lbs: Maddox Stevens won by decision.
152 lbs: Matt Morris won by forfeit.
160 lbs: Clayton Beesley won by forfeit.
170 lbs: Malachi Hoobery won by decision.
182 lbs: Rylee Willet won by fall.
195 lbs: Rafael Valdez won by forfeit.
220 lbs: Elijah Carter won by fall.
285 lbs: Tristan McMahill won by fall.
98 lbs: Billy Nevarez won by forfeit.
106 lbs: Aaron Despain won by fall.
113 lbs: Bobby Nevarez won by forfeit.
Weiser wasn’t done for the week, traveling to New Plymouth for the RD Brown Invitational Tournament. This is a single day tournament with 16 teams competing. There is 2A competition all the way up to 5A and a lot of wrestling is accomplished in a short amount of time.
Weiser had a fourth place finish this weekend with a couple of wrestlers out on the mend. Weiser did come in ahead of all of their 3A competition including Fruitland, Parma, and Homedale.
“We see a lot of good competition when we come to this tournament,” Dickerson said. “We hoped to have a few more wrestlers place a little higher, but to wrestle consistently each weekend and start adding duals in between can take a lot out of some teams. I am proud of our placers and this gives us a little more fight in each wrestler for the next tournament.”
Kooper von Brethorst took first place for the Wolverines, winning four matches and taking home a medal and an honorary Pilgrim hat from New Plymouth. Rylee Willet also had a good tournament, making it all the way to the finals and finishing second.
The Wolverines will be back in action this Wednesday at home against Payette. Results from the tournament were:
First place: Kooper von Brethorst 126 lbs., Juan Aguirre 132 lb., Eric Torres 138 lb.
Second place: Rylee Willet 182 lbs.
Third place: Boone Kziasek 160 lbs., Malachi Hoobery 170 lbs., Justin Petersen 132 lbs.
Fourth place: Mason Strong 120 lbs.
Fifth place: Bobby Nevarez 98 lbs., Matthew Morris 152 lbs., Oscar Cruz 195 lbs., Elijah Carter 220 lbs.
Sixth place: Billy Nevarez 98 lbs., Conor Marsh 120 lbs., Justin Williamson 126 lbs.
