Weiser wrestlers win District III championship for third year

Weiser Wolverine wrestlers became District III champions for the third straight year on Feb. 16.   
 Weiser recorded 40 pins during the meet and scored a whopping 390.5 team points, setting a district record.   
 Fruitland finished in second place with 266 points. At the end of the tournament on Saturday, Weiser qualified 21 wrestlers to compete in state.  
 By Sunday, coaches learned that two other wrestlers received at large bids to attend state as well.  
 “Qualifying this many wrestlers for the state competition is a huge feat,” Coach Drew Dickerson said.  “We had young men come prepared and ready to put forth their best effort.  They competed well and it will be fun to see how they do at state,” 
 There are also three sets of brothers competing at the state tournament this year: Darrian and Malachi Hoobery, Stetson and Clayton Beesley, and Brody and Kooper von Brethorst.
 Finishing first place for Weiser was freshman Jace Buescher at 98 pounds. This is Jace’s first year wrestling and he has competed well.  
 Kooper and Brody von Brethorst both finished first for Weiser at 126 and 152 pounds, respectively. Conor Marsh had a good showing in the finals to take first and wrestled his match strategically at 113 pounds.  
 Second place finishers were Mason Strong at 106 pounds, Justin Williamson at 126 pounds, Sylais York at 132 pounds, Robert Sudderth at 138 pounds,  Trae Gluch at 160 pounds, Malachi Hoobery at 170 pounds, Rylee Willet at 195 pounds, and Darrian Hoobery at 220 pounds.
 Third place finishers were Rafael Delgadillo at 113 pounds, Seth Harris at 120 pounds, Wyatt Hodges at 138 pounds, Matthew Morris at 145 pounds, Clayton Beesley at 152 pounds, Jesse Lockett at 182 pounds, and Paul Crawford at 195 pounds.
 Fourth place finishers were Braden Edwards at 132 pounds and Stetson Beesley at 160 pounds.
 Fifth place finishers were Boone Ksiazek at 170 pounds and Brandon Moore at 182 pounds.
 Sixth place finishers were Max Kingsbury at 145 pounds, Oscar Cruz at 220 pounds, and Elijah Carter at 285 pounds.
 First through fourth place are automatic qualifiers to the state tournament. The state tournament will be held in Pocatello this Friday and Saturday.
