Weiser wrestlers place first at Oregon tourney
The Weiser Wolverines had a busy weekend competing in the John Rysdam Memorial Tournament in Elgin, Ore.
A total of 37 Weiser wrestlers competed against seven other teams to take the first place trophy, scoring 185 points.
This tournament is set up as a pod tournament the first day, so wrestlers face each person in their pod in order to seed for the tournament on Saturday. This is sometimes tough because you can wrestle the same opponent multiple times.
Taking 37 wrestlers, Weiser saw many matches and many opportunities for improvement. Nearly 23 of the 37 wrestlers were underclassmen, so getting matches in, even if it is wrestling another Weiser opponent, can only make a wrestler better. Not all wrestlers can be in scoring position for their team either.
Weiser had nine wrestlers in the championship matches, with five receiving first place finishes.
“We were focused on wrestling all six minutes of our matches and learning how to finish. We have some young wrestlers who have not had the opportunity to compete at this level. These tournaments are tough and every wrestler has to do their part to ensure that the team succeeds. After Saturday, these boys are even stronger as a team and have a solid base to continue their success,” coach Drew Dickerson said.
Each year, the coaches vote on the Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament. Weiser’s Kooper von Brethorst was the recipient at this year’s tournament. He will receive a belt buckle to celebrate this honor.
