Weiser wrestlers get ready for season

Cross country season is definitely over, but you may have seen some Weiser High School wrestlers running around town recently.
The Weiser Wolverine wrestling season has begun. Wrestlers are definitely a different breed of athlete. Practices start with grueling runs before the wrestlers even get into the gym, but the real season started this past summer at “Mountain Man Wolverine Wrestling Camp.”
Many Wolverine wrestlers ventured up past McCall to Burgdorf for a 5-day camp to learn wrestling techniques, compete in daily “mountain man” challenges, and build on teamwork.
“That camp was a lot of work, but it was also a lot of fun,” coach Drew Dickerson said. “We wanted to teach these young men that there is a lot more to toughness than the wrestling room. These guys learned how to be mountain man tough in their daily routines and roughing it outdoors.  They also learned a lot about themselves and about being a team during that camp.”
Getting into the wrestling room this year the team is taking their mountain man toughness and continuing to build as a team. Dickerson returns for his 12th season as head coach, along with assistant coaches Chad Gibson, Chris Willet and Jay Rux.
Returning seniors this year include Mason Strong, Conor Marsh, Braden Edwards, Seth Harris, Robert Sudderth, and Matthew Morris.  This is a solid core of young men who should be able to set the tone for the season.
“This year has the potential of being great.  We have a lot of hard workers who were not excited by their fifth place team finish at state last year and are inspiring the younger wrestlers to put in the effort,” Dickerson said.
Returning for another shot at state are 2018-2019 state placers  Jace Buescher, Kooper von Brethorst, Justin Williamson and Rylee Willet.
Weiser will face the normal SRV opponents and should be in contention for another district title.
The Wolverines will test their strength on the mat this Friday and Saturday at Capital High School for the Buck’s Bags Invitational.  Go Wolverines.
