Weiser volleyball runs over Ontario, Payette

The Lady Wolverines were busy last week hosting matches on their home court, and their opponents did not find them very hospitable in either pairing with the Ontario Tigers or the Payette Pirates.
The Lady Wolverines began their week with a match against the visiting Ontario Tigers on Oct. 8, and the hard-hitting Wolverines made short work of the Tigers, sweeping the match 3-0 (25-18, 25-19 and 25-14).
The Lady Wolverines moved on to their final game of the year and the final volleyball game on their home court for three senior athletes. Prior to the match, varsity seniors Sara Lundberg, May Erke and Hailey Pearson were honored by the teammates, classmates, coaches and fans, which turned out in force in support of these fine young women.
The regular season of volleyball may be drawing to a close, but the future of all three of the senior honorees is extremely bright.
The Lady Wolverines wasted no time in the first set against the Pirates demonstrating their dominance, jumping to an early 4-0 lead during a conference match on Oct. 11.  Despite their best efforts the Pirate squad simply could not find any solid footing, and the Wolverines kept adding to their side of the scoreboard.
By the fourth rotation, the Wolverines had a dominant 12-3 lead and never let up on the gas.  Leading 20-9, Bella Strasser went on a 5-0 serving run to give the Wolverines the first set 25-9.
The Pirates must have had an inspirational moment between sets because they came out in the second set a different team, staying right with the Wolverines to the 10-10 point.  A Lundberg kill placed Strasser back to serve, and an ace serve and a pair of Lundberg kills allowed the Wolverines to pull ahead 13-10.
Both teams had some quality volleyball moments and the Pirates were hitting hard, but the momentum was definitely on the side of the Wolverines, as they were playing inspired for much of the second set. A kill by Strasser put her back to serve, and an ace and a pair of Lundberg kills kept Strasser tacking on points for the Wolverines.
Leading 13-11, Doty stepped behind the service line and remained there for an ace and 3-points. The Wolverines continued to have an answer for every Pirate offensive, by hitting hard, digging up balls and making some outstanding saves. The Pirates had no answer for the aggressive play of the Wolverines, and the Wolverines took the second set 25-13.
Set three was a dog fight from the beginning, with the Pirates battling for every ball, but the Wolverines continued their solid play and maintained a lead throughout the entire third set. The hitting by all of the Wolverines was accurate and powerful and the blocking was strong.
The Pirates managed to inch within one point at 13-12, but Lundberg stuffed a Pirate serve and followed it with a kill. Another stuff block by Lundberg and kills by Fuller, Soulen and Doty put the lid on the set 25-17 and the match 3-0.
The Wolverines begin post-season play at the SRV Conference District Tournament next week to vie for a berth to the 3A State Volleyball Tournament.
