Weiser veteran thankful for help

Weiser resident Steve Stayton had plenty of enthusiastic help cleaning up his yard on East 2nd Street on Monday.
Stayton, a Vietnam veteran who suffers from health issues, was thrilled when local contractor Two Rivers Debris Removal owners Jeff and Jan Burch donated their time and equipment to help out and were joined by seven airmen from Mountain Home Air Force Base.
Jeff Burch is Stayton’s nephew and he had already planned to do the cleanup himself. Then he met up with Stayton’s son-in-law, Air Force Staff Sgt. Robert Lindsay, at a recent Weiser football game and the two decided to join forces on the yardwork at Stayton’s home.
Lindsay put out the call at MHAFB, where he is currently stationed, for volunteers to help with the yardwork.
Plenty of airmen from MHAFB wanted to help out but had prior commitments, he said, but seven made the trip to Weiser.
The project started at 9 a.m. and by 2 p.m. the cleanup crew had already made a couple of trips to the county transfer station with yard waste. They hauled off two full 16-foot trailer loads of leaves, weeds and other unwanted stuff.
“It’s been a lot of raking and a lot of hauling,” Jeff Burch said on a warm Monday afternoon.
Stayton said he was especially thankful for the help because his health has not been that great of late and he could not do the yard work himself.
The airmen and Burch mowed the front yard and went to work raking and removing debris in the backyard.
He said the volunteers did “an excellent job.”
Tech. Sgt. Jason Geelan said the airmen jumped onboard when they heard they could help.
All of the airmen work in the same shop at Mountain Home as vehicle mechanics, he said.
“I like to give back,” airman Demonte Willis said.
Slayton, who has lived in Weiser since 2000, served in the Navy as a Seabee.
“That is one of the big reasons we wanted to get this done,” Burch said.
