Weiser varsity volleyball team celebrates seven seniors

The stands were filled in the Tom Falash Gymnasium at Weiser High School last week for what would be the last regular season volleyball game on the home court for seven senior Lady Wolverine volleyball players.
Parents, fans and students came out in force to recognize the athletic careers of these young women and celebrate their contributions to the WHS volleyball program.
Seniors and their accompanying parents were Ciana Fuller, Jade Simonsen, Grace Soulen, LynnZ Rasmussen, Bella Strasser, Riley Warner and Macy Marquez.
In addition to the senior presentation, the crowd was also treated to the National Anthem sang by Emma Tolman and accompanied by Jenaye Grant, daughter of varsity head coach Lindsay Grant.
The Lady Wolverines began the first set against rival Fruitland Grizzlies as strong as any showing this season.  The Wolverines appeared to have plans of redemption, as the earlier season pairing was close, but the Grizzlies came out on top, winning the match 3-0 in extremely close sets.
The first set was a trading of points to the 10-10 mark, when the Grizzlies were able to gain some ground, pulling away 11-14 with a series of unanswered kills into the Wolverine court. However, a motivational timeout by coach Grant helped to break the Grizzlies’ streak, and an impressive stuff block and a pair of kills by Reagan Doty, a kill by Grace Soulen and some really aggressive and scrappy play enabled the Wolverines to pull within 3-points at 14-17.  Libero Macey Buescher began serving and served three consecutive aces to tie the set.
The Wolverines continued to battle, but periodic lapses in focus was what the Grizzlies needed to surge ahead and take the first set 19-25.
The Lady Wolverines were undeterred by the initial loss and came out strong in the second set, trading points until a tie at 7-7.  With Doty back to serve, an ace and a streak of Grizzlies errors, the Wolverines took the lead 9-7.
The Wolverines maintained their lead until the 12-12 mark, and then wildly aggressive play on both sides of the court, with both teams fighting for every side-out, resulted in the trading of points until the Grizzlies pulled ahead 16-15. An ace serve into the Wolverine court seemed to be the impetus for a gradual decline in intensity on the Wolverine side.
Despite their continued effort, the Wolverines were unable to regain the lead and dropped the second set 21-25.
Whether it was focus or fatigue, the Wolverines never really came out of the starting gate in the third, and what would be the final set of the 0-3 match. The Grizzlies jumped to a 1-9 lead before a nice kill by Doty stopped the surge.
However, the Wolverines were unable to capitalize on the opportunity and messy play, coverage issues, well-placed Grizzlies attacks and a couple questionable calls, soon had the Wolverines trailing 3-17.  The Wolverines never were able to gain any sustainable momentum to mount a defense and lost the set 9-24 and the match 0-3.
The Wolverines have one remaining league match against the Homedale Trojans and will host the SRV District Tournament starting Oct. 22-24.
The last time these two SRV Conference teams met on Oct. 8 at Homedale the Lady Wolverines were swept in straight sets, 10-25, 19-25 and 20-25.
