Weiser varsity volleyball has depth at all positions

Despite the day-to-day uncertainty regarding COVID-19, schools and fall athletic programs, the Weiser High School volleyball program was given the go-ahead by the Weiser school board on Aug. 10 and the coaches and athletes wasted no time surging forward with their 2020 season.
Once varsity head coach Lindsay Grant was given clearance to proceed, coaches and 39 student-athletes hit the gym the following day to give players an opportunity to vie for a position on one of the coveted Lady Wolverine volleyball squads.
Team tryouts were held in an all-day thorough workout and teams were determined for the 2020 season.
Grant returns for her third year as the leader of the program and is joined by 2017 Weiser graduate and Lady Wolverine setter CJ Davis as varsity assistant coach.  Michelle Estes will return as coach of the junior varsity team as well as Anna Grandi as the frosh/soph coach.
“We graduated seven seniors last year, but we have a strong core of returning varsity players,” Grant said, and she is “looking forward to this upcoming season.” As is all the Lady Wolverine fans that have been suffering through the athletic drought of the past six months.
Despite the loss of seven 2019 players, the 2020 squad is jam packed with youthful talent at all grade levels.
Seniors Reagan Doty and Macey Buescher will return to the court in the outside hitter and libero positions, respectively, and they hope to lead their team back to the 3A Idaho state volleyball tournament in Twin Falls for the second consecutive year.
Senior Shelby Aldrich will help in both the hitting and setting positions and junior Ivy Morris will return as a member of the setting personnel and will be aided by freshman Danica Lockett. Sophomores Whitney Cordes and Jasi Yraguen return as a hitting and blocking duo and should give opponents a battle at the net.  Juniors Denica McClellan and Emma Tolman made the move up to the varsity level this season as well as sophomores, Mattie Shirts and Tobie Noyer.
With the experienced returning players and “a very talented younger group, we have a lot of depth at all positions at the varsity level,”   Grant said. “I believe that all three teams will compete at a high level this year and I am excited to get the season underway.”
The Lady Wolverines will kick off their season on Aug. 26 with a home pairing at Tom Falash Gymnasium against fellow Washington County players the Tri-Valley Titans.  There will only be JV and varsity games.
JV will begin at 6 p.m. with the varsity game beginning approximately 20 minutes after the conclusion of the JV game. These games will be the first Wolverine sports since March and are sure to be exciting for the coaches, athletes and the community.
