Weiser varsity men lose to 4A Emmett Huskies

The Weiser Wolverine men’s basketball team played the Emmett Huskies at home on Jan. 5. This was the first game of the season where spectators were allowed. Each athlete was able to invite two family members. It was far from the normal crowd and noise level, but it was great for parents to have the chance to watch their athlete play.
Weiser struggled to keep control of the ball on their first few possessions.
Emmett struck first with a rebound put back. Soon afterwards, Tyler Pope opened it up for Weiser with a baseline jumper.
The teams traded buckets for the next few minutes. Weiser’s Brett Spencer had a nice fake to get his defender to jump and then dribbled around him for a jump shot tying the game at four with 5:35 left to play.
Running a quick offense, Emmett kept the Wolverines on their toes. The Huskies gradually added to their points widening their lead.
A solid three-pointer by Eli Ruiz with 2:23 left was Weiser’s last points for the first quarter. At the buzzer it was Weiser 10, Emmett 20.
The second quarter was a defensive stand by both the Wolverines and the Huskies. After a long dry spell, Emmett scored first.
About midway through, Michael Youngberg of the Wolverines went up for a shot in the paint, went to the ground as he was hit hard. Making his first free throw he was the first to score for Weiser in the second quarter.
With less than two minutes left to play in the first half the score was still Weiser 11, Emmett 22.
Ruiz made a quick two points for Weiser to end the Wolverines scoring in the first half. The second ended Weiser 14, Emmett 27.
The Huskies had the ball first in the third quarter. A steal by Ruiz gave the ball back to the Wolverines.
With about a minute off the clock, Spencer cut to the free throw line, where Ruiz found him with a nice pass. Spencer hit the shot scoring first in the second half. Weiser 16, Emmett 27.
Weiser had multiple opportunities to score but were unable to convert.
With just under 2:30 left in the third, Evan Haggerty of Weiser picked up an offensive rebound. He went back up strong and was able to add two points.
On a baseline inbounds play Wolverine Brayden Walker sunk a three-pointer from the corner making it an eight-point game.
After three quarters it was Weiser 23, Emmett 31.
Emmett came out hot in the fourth making a couple of buckets at the free throw line and then the next trip down sinking a three-pointer.
A couple of minutes into the fourth, Haggerty added one-point at the line. Weiser wasn’t able to score again until less than three minutes left in the game when Ray Calley hit a jump shot.
Calley added a spark to the Wolverines making a three-pointer a minute later. Next trip down the court he made a bucket for two more points.
With not enough time left to close the gap, Weiser lost 33, Emmett 50.
The Wolverines will face the Fruitland Grizzlies at home in their first conference competition on Tuesday, Jan. 12.
