Weiser varsity boys go 1-2 in holiday tourney

The Weiser High School varsity boys basketball team finished with a 1-2 record at the recent three-day holiday tournament at Nampa Christian High School.
    The Wolverines trounced Compass Charter School in the opening game 54-15 on Dec. 19. The contest was all but decided by the end of the first half. Weiser was in front 28-3 at the end of the first quarter and held a 30-point lead at halftime with the score 42-12.
    Weiser let up on the scoring in the second half. In the second half, the Wolverines scored 12 points to their opponents’ 3 dismal points. The Wolverines won by 39 points at the buzzer with the score 54-15.
    Also, the scoring dipped in the second half when Weiser’s coaches subbed in players who don’t see a lot of playing time. A total of 11 Wolverines contributed to the scoring.
    Weiser shot an impressive 21-for-35 for 60 percent from the floor and hit four of 15 attempts from beyond the 3-point line.   
    Brett Spencer led the Wolverines in scoring with 11 points, followed by Ande Jensen with 10 points. Tyler Pope contributed six points. Angel Magana, Tim Reed, Justin Estes, Nate Lattin and Layten Tolmen each scored four points. Ray Calley had three points and Caleb Harris and Willie Shirts each collected two points.
    In game two, Weiser lost 62-33 to Lighthouse Christian on Dec. 20. The Wolverines finished the tournament with a game against Meridian’s Ambrose Charter School on Dec. 21. It was a close contest that Ambrose won by six points, 46-40.
    Complete stats were not available for the final two games.
    The Wolverines, whose records stands at 4-5, have three more non-conference games before league play begins against Homedale at the Trojans gym on Jan. 14.
    Weiser goes on the road to play Baker City this week on Jan. 2.
    On Tuesday, Jan. 7, Filer visits Weiser. The final nonconference game will be played against Vale on Wednesday, Jan. 8, at home.
