Weiser track team returns many state qualifiers

The Wolverine track team is ready for the season with 90 students participating. Weiser looks to have many strong events and to be competitive in the district.
The coaching staff for the Wolverines this year includes Dave Shirts as head coach and sprint/relay coach. Sarah Bruce is coaching distance events, while John Srholec and Ed Kautz are coaching discus and shotput. Doug Applegate returns to coach pole vault, and Roger Watkins coaches long jump and triple jump. Leighann Thomas is coaching hurdles. Dan Makley coaches high jump and sprints and Gary Thomas will help with sprints and relays.
With returning state qualifiers and previously strong performers in hurdles, 200 meters, 400 meters, discus, shotput, as well as pole vaulters, triple jumpers and high jumpers, the coaches said that they are looking forward to strong performances by returning athletes in those events as well as young prospects that are showing potential to step up in many of the other events.
Senior Angel Magana qualified in discus; junior Jordan Watkins qualified in the triple jump; senior Nathan Turner was part of both the sixth place 4x400 relay as well as the third place sprint medley relay; junior Nick Swank qualified in high jump; junior Tristan Kautz earned fourth place last year in the 400 meter sprint as well as running as part of the 4x400 relay and the sprint medley relay.
For the girls, junior Alyssa Olvera was part of the second place sprint medley team; junior Ashlyn Walker qualified in long jump; sophomore Ashlyn Walker qualified in the long jump; senior Ellie Walker qualified in both the 100 meter and 300 meter hurdles as well as the triple jump; senior Kaiya Sanchez qualified last year in the long jump; junior Reagan Doty was part of the second place sprint medley team as well as placing third in pole vault; sophomore Shae Kunz was part of the second place sprint medley team; and senior Victoria Wyss qualified last year in pole vault
“We look for our state returners to come on strong for us this year as well as several upper class athletes who are out for their first year,” Shirts said.
Shirts also shared that the team has 26 freshmen out and that he expects several of them are going to contribute greatly. With the great early spring weather, the team has been able to get all of the field equipment out and use it – the high jump and pole vault pits, discus cage, long and triple, and shot put areas are all ready.
The team was able to get some good track workouts in as well as good field event practice during the first week.
“The weather has been great.  It has allowed us to get an early start on many events. We have a lot of athletes working very hard, and they are getting very excited about competing,” Shirts said.
The biggest competition in the SRV Conference this year will be Fruitland. They have a lot of athletes out for track, with some good quality in many events, coaches said.
The Wolverines also will face Cascade, Greenleaf, Liberty Charter, Marsing, Meadows Valley, Nampa Christian, North Star Charter, Wilder, and Parma at the Parma Ice Breaker for their opening meet on Thursday, March 12.
