The Weiser High School tennis team dominated Parma in boys and girls singles on Thursday, but the Panthers rallied in doubles and got the win over the Wolverines 7-5.
It was the second meeting of the season between these two SRV Conference rivals. While Weiser has kept it close both times, Parma has proven to be a tough opponent and holds a 2-0 record.
Weiser coach Angie Soulen said the Wolverines benefitted when the Panthers switched around their lineup, moving the No. 1 boys singles player to No. 2 doubles. The move helped Weiser get one more win during the match. The girls and mixed doubles teams gave their opponents a challenge.
“We were really happy with how the team did overall,” she said.
Bryce Bake, playing in the No. 1 spot for Weiser, continues to win in singles for the Wolverines. He cruised to a straight set win over Parma’s Parker Dodge, 6-0, 6-1.
Weiser senior Eli To’omalatai prevailed in a match against Josiah Larson that went three sets. To’omalatai won the first set 6-4, but dropped the second set 4-6. He came back to dominate in the third set 6-1 for the win.
Junior Isaac To’omalatai completed the sweep for Weiser in boys singles. He beat Parma’s Shane Knickerbocker in two sets, 6-3, 6-1.
In girls singles, Weiser’s Grace Soulen had to go three sets to get the win against Parma’s Angel Salinas. Soulen dropped the first set but was able to come back and win the next two, 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 to clinch the victory.
Playing in the No. 2 girls singles spot for Weiser, Andrea Bouvia found herself in a tough contest that also went three sets. After losing the first set, Bouvia recovered and won the next two, 4-6, 6-4, 6-2.
While Weiser got the near sweep in singles action, the Panthers won all of the doubles matches, including boys, girls and mixed.
