Last Wednesday, the Weiser Wolverine baseball team traveled to Parma for another conference matchup and came away with a win over the Panthers 15-7.
Freshman Willy Shirts started out on the mound for the Wolverines pitching five innings, allowing five hits and striking out six batters.
Weiser scored one run in the first inning with Logan Wood walking and Jayden Mink hitting a single to score him. Without much offense in the second inning, Weiser capitalized on a double play followed by a strike out to get out of the inning.
In the third inning, Logan Wood reached first on an error, Kooper von Brethorst grounded out to first advancing Wood, and then Jayden Mink laid down a bunt to the pitcher that was mishandled, leaving him safe on first and scoring Wood.
Brody von Brethorst walked, advancing Mink to second.  Ray Calley singled to shortstop on a hard hit and advanced all the runners to load the bases.
Tyler Pope got up to bat and grounded out to the pitcher, scoring Mink and advancing B. von Brethorst and Calley.  Willy Shirts got up to bat and hit a nice double scoring both B. von Brethorst and Calley.  Freshman, Brett Spencer got up to bat and hit a nice shot out to left field for a triple, scoring Ty Barnett who courtesy ran for Shirts.
Weiser then held Parma to three up and three down for a score of 6-0 at the end of three innings.
Weiser continued to hit the ball, but right to people in the top of the fourth inning, again had some great pitching and defense striking out two batters and fielding one for three quick outs in the bottom of the fourth inning.
In the top of the fifth inning, Brody von Brethorst hit a double out to right field and then stole third as Ray Calley was batting.  Calley would pop out to the second baseball, bringing up Tyler Pope. Pope would single on a grounder to third, holding B. von Brethorst at third.
Willy Shirts then bunted out to the catcher, advancing Pope to second, but still holding von Brethorst at third. Brett Spencer got to first on a walk, and then Weiser had a line-up change with Jarret Mink coming to the plate.  He singled to center field scoring both B. von Brethorst and Pope. Spencer advanced to second on the single.
The inning ended with a fielder’s choice third out and a Weiser lead of 8-0. Weiser collected three outs with some good fielding by Spencer at third, Kooper von Brethorst at short stop, and Jayden Mink at second.
Weiser then added two more runs in the top of the sixth inning.  Kooper von Brethorst singled to the third baseman, Jayden Mink singled on a hit to left field, advancing K. von Brethorst, and then Brody von Brethorst grounded out to second baseman, advancing K. von Brethorst to third and Mink to second. Ray Calley hit a ground ball reaching first on an error by the pitcher, scoring K. von Brethorst and advancing Mink to third. Willy Shirts got up to the plate, singled on a ground ball to the pitcher, scoring Mink and advancing Calley to third.
Weiser would leave runners on with a final fly out to the second baseman. With a score of 10-0, Weiser just needed to hold the Panthers to be done with the game, but that didn’t happen. Walking a couple of batters, Weiser changed pitchers to Kooper von Brethorst, who struck out his first batter, but then faced Parma’s number four batter, who hit a double and scored two runs.
Brody von Brethorst then came in to pitch for Weiser.  Parma picked up three more runs, pushing the Wolverines to the seventh inning. Nathan McDaniel walked for Weiser, Logan Wood singled to the right fielder, advancing McDaniel.
Kooper von Brethorst laid down a nice bunt to the pitcher beating it out to first and advancing the runners. Jayden Mink singled to second base scoring McDaniel and again advancing the runners.  Brody von Brethorst came to the plate and singled again for the Wolverines, scoring Wood and advancing runners.
With Ray Calley in the batter’s box, K. von Brethorst scored on a wild pitch again advancing runners and Calley ended up with a walk.  Pope came to the plate and walked; Willy Shirts hit into a double play, but scored B. von Brethorst and advanced Calley to third.  Brett Spencer walked and would be left on base with Calley to end the top of the seventh with a score of 15-5.
Weiser allowed two additional runs in the bottom of the seventh for an ending score of 15-7.  Weiser is currently in second place in the league and has a good shot at continued success for the remainder of the year.
“We have been overcoming as of late. Sometimes things don’t go our way, but we have adopted a predator mindset. We don’t hang our heads, or dwell on things we cannot control. Instead, these young men have been focusing on the next play or the next pitch and that has taken us up a level,” Weiser coach Bowe von Brethorst said.
