Weiser stumbles in first game of SRV District Tournament

The Weiser boys basketball team couldn’t contain a Parma squad that was firing on all cylinders on Saturday night in the opening game of the SRV District tournament at TVCC.
Weiser played tentative from the opening buzzer, allowing Parma to dominate both ends of the court and run up an early lead. The Panthers outscored the Woverines in three of four periods on their way to a 48-28 win.
Both Weiser and Parma came into Saturday night’s first-round district game with identical records of 5-3 in the SRV Conference. The Panthers had the better overall record of 18-3 compared to the Wolverines’ record of 13-8.
The Wolverines had trouble all evening getting the ball inside for high percentage shots against Parma’s tough defense.
Weiser also found it difficult to hit baskets from the outside, shooting only 24 percent from the floor in the game. Weiser went 6-for-25 on fieldgoals and 3-for-12 on 3-point shots.
Weiser’s best shooters couldn’t get dialed in and no Wolverine reached double-digits in scoring against Parma. Weiser’s leading scorer, Braden Bumgarner, was held to three points.
Weiser fell behind to a hustling Parma team that got the ball inside and passed the ball around to find the open player for outside shots.
The Panthers shot 58 percent from the floor, hitting 11-of-19 fieldgoals and making 7-for-15 on 3-points shots.
The Wolverines scored only five points in the first quarter and even had a couple of shots blocked. Angel Magana hit a 3-pointer and Tim Reed scored a basket for Weiser’s only points in the period.
The Wolverines were not in a deep hole at the end of the first period, but they were behind 10-5 and didn’t have an answer for the Panthers’ game plan.
Weiser could still not find a way to score a basket as the second period got underway. The Wolverines were forced to call a timeout to try to slow Parma down. The Panthers began to stretch their lead with seven unanswered points at 17-5 with five minutes left in the second period.
Weiser’s shooting was ice cold from outside as Parma’s Braydon Jensen hit a bucket and was fouled. He made the three-point play and pushed the Panthers’ lead to 20-5.
A basket by Weiser and two free throws by Justin Estes added four points for the Wolverines and trimmed Parma’s lead to 13 at 22-9. Weiser put on a full-court press to try to slow down the Panthers’ fast-transition offense.
With less than a minute left in the first half, a wide-open Payden Rohrbacher got a good look and drilled a 3-pointer from outside the arc to give Parma a 27-11 lead at halftime.
The Panthers stretched their lead to 20 points with the score 31-11 with 6:06 left in the third period. Parma players, who held the height advantage over Weiser, were getting shots in the paint and getting them to fall.
A tenacious Tim Reed made a break to the basket and what looked to be an easy two points for Weiser was denied with the blocked shot by a Panther. Reed got the ball again and did get the layup and two points for Weiser.
Weiser kept the game within 20 points but couldn’t make much headway in closing the gap as the third quarter came to a close. Nate Lattin stole the ball for Weiser and took the ball to the hoop for Weiser’s short highlight reel.
In the final period, Parma’s top scorer Jared Nielsen sank a 3-pointer from outside to push the Panthers’ lead to 23 points at 44-21. Nielsen led the Panthers with 21 points, followed by Brayden Jensen, who contributed 11 points in Parma’s win.
With two minutes left in the game, Weiser’s Estes stole the ball and made the lay-up and was fouled for a three-point play. Reed added another basket to collect six points in the game and Isaiah Daniel got on the scoreboard with a 3-pointer.
The game ended with Parma out in front by 20 points and the score 48-28.
Tim Reed led Weiser in scoring with six points, followed by Justin Estes and Nate Lattin, who each contributed five points. Braden Bumgarner scored three points, along with Isaiah Daniel and Angel Magana. Ande Jensen had two points and Caleb Harris scored one point.
Weiser’s opening-round loss in the double elimination SRV District Tournament pitted them against Homedale for a must-win game for both teams to be played on Tuesday night at TVCC. The winner would play in game six for the runner-up spot and a berth at the 3A state championships.
