Weiser starts football season with 41-7 win against Buhl on Friday

It has been almost five months since our community has been able to attend a sporting event at the high school level.  All of that changed last week at the high school.
Friday night at Roy Dickerson Memorial Field, the Weiser Wolverines took on the Buhl Indians in the football opener for the year.  This was a great game for the Wolverines, defeating the Indians 41-7 and setting the tone for the year.
Weiser started out well marching the ball down and scoring off a 12 yard reception from quarterback Brett Spencer to Bryce Crimin.
Filling some large shoes this year, Willy Shirts took over for Angel Magana and kicked the extra point for the Wolverines to give them seven points on the scoreboard.
Buhl was unable to match those points during the first quarter and Weiser again scored on a pass from Brett Spencer to Brock Spencer for another 12-yard reception and touchdown. Brock Spencer, a freshman, went man to man against the Buhl defender and pulled down a well thrown ball.  The extra point got away from the Wolverines, but brought the score to 13-0 halfway through the second quarter.
Weiser’s defense held the Indians scoreless the first half of the game allowing the offense to work their game plan.
Late in the second quarter, Brett Spencer connected once again with a great pass to senior Bryce Crimin for a 28 yard touchdown followed by another extra point kick by Willy Shirts.
Going into halftime, the Wolverines had the lead 20-0.
During the third quarter, Brett Spencer decided to take the ball himself for a quick 5 yard rushing touchdown.
This time, Buhl responded with their quarterback, Drexler Jaynes moving through and breaking tackles to rush for a 53-yard touchdown.  Buhl got the extra point and got on the scoreboard at 26-7.
In the fourth quarter, Weiser marched the length of the field and at the one yard line; senior Beau Shields got the call to push the ball in for a touchdown.  Willy Shirts added the extra point and then it was the defense’s turn to keep the Indians from scoring.
Weiser would add another 20 yard reception for a touchdown from Sam Kerner to Carlos Arana late in the game. Levi Estes got the carry on a 2 point conversion and took the ball in 3 yards for a final score of 41-7.
Weiser’s offense dominated the game with 146 yards passing and 239 yards rushing.
Jack Burke once again showed his dominance with 45 yards.  He was in good company with Brett Spencer with 48 yards, Michael Youngberg with 50 yards, and Willy Shirts with 56 yards.
Weiser’s defense did a phenomenal job of holding Buhl to just 202 offensive yards.
Notable tackles were made by many Wolverines including Eric Torres, Dayton Turrentine, Jesse Lockett, Rylee Willet, Beau Shields, and Elijah Carter.
Coach Tom Harrison was happy with the level of performance from his team. “Number one, it’s a great day when we can actually compete in a football game, and number two, it’s even better when everyone can play. We got everybody in and that means that our offense and defense did the work that they needed to do,” Coach Harrison said.
“It was just a really good feeling to be on the field with people in the stands and on the hill and I am happy that our boys played well,” Harrison added.
This Friday, the Wolverines will travel to Emmett and face the Huskies, a team that Harrison knows well, having coached there for three years prior to Weiser High School.
“We definitely want to compete against Emmett this next week.  They are a 4A team that I know well and they have some good guys that will give us a good fight.  I am looking forward to it,” Head Coach Harrison stated.
