Weiser runners see season-best times at Crosby Invitational

Numerous members of the Weiser boys and girls cross country teams ran their best races of the season against a host of Oregon and Idaho teams on Thursday at the Crosby Invitational at TVCC in Ontario.
The 5,000-meter course at TVCC was mostly grass terrain with several small hills. The weather was perfect for a cross county meet,  with overcast skies and cool but not cold temperatures.
In team scores, Baker High School placed first for the varsity boys, with Enterprise finishing in second place and Mountain Home coming in third place. Weiser finished ahead of Adrian, Vale, Columbia and Four Rivers in 17th place.
Weiser senior Nate Lattin paced the Wolverines and ran his best race this season, shaving four seconds off his finish from last week.
Lattin posted a time of 19:37.56. Last week he finished with a time of 19:41.76.
Teammate Colyer Chandler also had a good race with a time of 21:26.71, a finish that was 18 seconds faster than his previous best time this season. Freshman Dylan Turrentine also put in a season-best time at TVCC. His finish of 21:28.29 in the 5,000 meters was 32 seconds faster than his previous best time.
Other finishers for the Weiser boys team included Colton Foster (20:22), Michael Despain (20:42), Ben Hathhorn (21:01.89) and Tyler Walker (21:35.41).
A number of runners in the field of varsity boys had sub-17 minute finishes. Enterprise High School’s Henry Coughlan placed first with a time of 16:12.59. Jacob Criddle of Mountain Home took second place with a time of 16:17.28. Leland McAbee crossed the finish line in 16:29.51 and placed third for The Ambrose School.
For the Weiser varsity girls, Ellie Walker finished with a season-best time of 23:21.40. Her time at the Crosby Invitational was 20 seconds faster than her previous best race. Teammates Stephanie Bodett, Libbie Rynearson, Kiearra Hoobery and Emily Abramson also posted season-best times.
Bodett finished with a time of 24:43.37, besting her previous fastest time of 25:08 and posting a new personal record. Rynearson ran the TVCC course in 24:33.50, which was almost a minute faster than her previous best time of 25:30.10 and also a personal record. Abramson’s time of 25:13.76 was faster than her best race to date of 25:40.70.
Hoobery ran a sub-24 minute race for the first time this season. Her time of 23:32 was more than 30 seconds faster than her previous best time this year. Other Weiser girls who finished included Ashlyn Walker (26:31.99) and Ellie Eames (26:36.18).
In team scores for the varsity girls, Burns finished in first place, followed by Nampa in second and Mountain Home in third place. The Weiser girls finished ahead of Parma and Homedale in 10th place.
Nampa’s Cassandra Vasquez won the girls race with a time of 19:07.90 and finished 20 seconds in front of runner-up Cameron Moore of The Ambrose School. Moore posted a time of 19:27.58. Emmett’s Gemma LaVergne finished in third place with a time of 19:49.61.
The better times were exactly what Weiser coach Scott Hale wanted to see with two meets left before the SRV districts.
Hale said as a coach he always thinks there is room for athletes to  get better and run faster.
“Overall, as a team, they have been doing every reasonable thing I have asked them to do, including with their race times,” he said.
“I certainly can’t expect them to get their best times every race, but the general trend should always be toward improvement.”
The Weiser cross country runners will be home for the SRV Invitational on Wednesday, Oct. 9. The event will be held at Rolling Hills Golf Course in Weiser.  With its hills, the 5K course is considered one of the most challenging in the SRV Conference.
