Weiser runners post season-best times

Weiser cross country runner Mitchell Westover runs the 5,000-meter course at the Crosby Invitational last week at TVCC in Ontario, Ore. Coaches like to see runners start to peak about now, with the district championships coming up in two weeks, and Weiser’s varsity runners are getting faster at every race.

A total of nine Weiser High School varsity cross country runners ran their best times of the season and set personal records last week at the Crosby Invitational at Treasure Valley Community College in Ontario, Ore.
The fast times for Weiser runners come with just one cross country event left in the regular season on Oct. 10 before the SRV 3A District championships on Oct. 18.
In team scores, the Weiser boys finished in 13th place, one spot ahead of Homedale, out of 16 varsity teams, including many Oregon schools. The Weiser girls finished in 10th place out of 13 teams.
Weiser senior Rhett Kunz ran his best race of the season and notched a personal record time. He finished 12th in a large field of 115 runners competing at TVCC.
Kunz finished the 5,000 meters in a time of 17 minutes, 12 seconds. His previous best time this year was 17:22.3 he posted on Sept. 22. His finish at the Crosby Invitational was his second finish this season under 18 minutes.
Weiser coach Scott Hale said he’s hopeful Kunz will break the 17-minute mark by the end of the season as he continues to get faster. He also noted Weiser varsity runners Guillermo Cobos, an exchange student, and Nate Lattin both finished under 20 minutes and had PRs.
The race winner at the Crosby Invitational was Tim Stevens of Union, Ore., who ran a fast 15:27. Parma’s Alex Peterson took second place in a time of 16:19, and another Union runner, Jack Silveira, took third place in a time of 16:23.
The other Weiser boys finishing the varsity race at the Crosby Invitational included Nate Lattin (PR 19:37), Guillermo Cobos (PR 19:44), Colton Foster (20:42), Mitchell Westover (21:38), Michael Despain (21:45), Luke Johnson (PR 22:27.0).
Weiser senior Abbey Shirts took fourth place in a field of 98 varsity runners for the girls. She ran the race in a time of 20 minutes, 7 seconds. Her best time this season was a sub-20 minute finish of 19:35.9 on Sept. 22.
Hale said he knows that Shirts has a goal of winning district this year and several other girls had season best times last week.
The varsity girls race was won by Fruitland’s Emma Hillam, a freshman, in a time of 19:20. Two runners from Oregon, Ellyse Tingelstad of Enterprise, Ore., and McKenzi Hoyt of Burns, Ore., finished in second and third, respectively, with times of 19:38 and 19:51.
Weiser junior Ellie Walker ran her fastest race of the season with a time of 23:38. Other Weiser girls who finished the varsity race included Emily Abramson (24:05), Alonna Freeland (24:07), Ashlyn Walker (24:21), Libbie Rynearson (24:45), Madi Cobb (27:10).
“I think we have a good shot at having five runners under 20 minutes by district,” Hale said. “We’re really focusing on preparing the whole team for that race.”
The Wolverines will compete at the Winston Tilzey Invitational on Wednesday, Oct. 10. The course is located at West Park in Nampa.
The SRV District III championships will be held at Mann Farms in Parma.
