Weiser Recreation Dept. receives donation of sports equipment

Last week, Tim Brady of the Idaho Youth Sports Commission, a 501(c)(3) non-profit, delivered about $2,000 of youth sports equipment to the City for the Weiser Recreation Department.  
 This was not the result of a grant application or request made by the City of Weiser. Brady contacted Ken Anderson, our recreation director, to ask if we could use the equipment, to which, of course, Ken said, “Yes!”  
 The donated equipment included baseball pants and helmets, football shoulder pads, tennis nets, etc.  
 Brady was unable to deliver all of the equipment slated for Weiser in one trip; so, this past Saturday, Ken Anderson of our recreation department, drove to Boise to pick up the remainder.    
 In addition, the IYSC is planning to hold a coaches’ clinic in the area in the near future to help train coaches to not only coach, but to teach their players life skills.  
 We want to say a big “Thank You!” to the Idaho Youth Sports Commission for this generous donation and to their commitment to our youth, coaches, and parents to promote an attitude of winning – not only in sports, but in life.

 In other news, the West 9th St. project is coming along ahead of schedule. The bridge floor and walls have been constructed. The road deck should be poured later this week if all goes as planned.  Again, I just want to say “thank you” to all of the people who have worked on this project over the years. Your persistence is paying off!
 Don’t forget the ROSE Advocates annual “Soup Bowl” fundraiser on March 1. Rose Advocates provides a very vital service in our community.  Their efforts provide domestic violence victims the support they need in crisis situations. Let’s show how much we appreciate the work of these dedicated professionals, workers, and volunteers by supporting them by buying tickets at their office at 27 West Commercial St. for this event!
 On the COVID-19 front, our numbers continue to decrease. There have been eight new cases in the last two weeks. Of those eight cases, only two occurred in the last week. This decrease is following a similar pattern for the state and for the nation. Your efforts at keeping COVID-19 at bay are working.  
 However, having just passed the 500,000 mark in U.S. deaths and 21 deaths in Weiser, we are not out of the woods yet. Please keep up the habits of wearing masks, distancing, and sanitizing.   
 On the vaccine front, Family Medical Center, Bi-Mart, and Ridley’s have been allocated a supply and have the ability to administer the vaccine to eligible recipients.
 At this stage, those eligible basically include medical personnel, EMS, first responders, teachers, and those 65 years old and older.  If you are eligible and you have not already scheduled an appointment, you can call one of these three providers to schedule a time.
