Weiser came out running the ball against Parma on Friday night at Roy Dickerson Memorial Field, grinding out 262 rushing yards on the grass, while the defense held the Panthers scoreless through three quarters.
It was another rout for the Wolverines with the final score 39-7 over Parma. Weiser remains  unbeaten at 5-0 and picked up its first conference win against the Panthers.
Weiser fans came out in big numbers for the SRV Conference game and for homecoming. The hill was a sea of white and red and the best crowd of the season so far filled the stands.
The victory over Parma was a treat for members of the Weiser High School Class of 1969, who were in town to celebrate their 50th reunion and take part in homecoming events. There were also members of the Class of 1974.
Much of the first quarter was a defensive struggle with neither team able to do much on offense or sustain any significant drives. Punters for both teams got in a workout.
A penalty against Parma for an illegal hit moved the ball to the Panthers’ 19-yard line. Weiser settled for a fieldgoal by sure-footed Angel Magana and 3 points with 6:59 left in the first quarter. The low-scoring first quarter ended with Weiser in front 3-0.
Weiser’s first touchdown came with 9:46 left in the second quarter. Quarterback and all-around offensive playmaker Brett Spencer kept the ball, found a hole in Parma’s defense and scampered 64 yards. Spencer made the 2-point conversion with another keeper and a 3-yard run to make the score 11-0.
With a minute and change left in the first half, power back Layten Tolman found paydirt with a 10-yard rushing touchdown. Weiser began to widen the lead with the score 18-0.
Weiser wasn’t done scoring in the first half. After moving the ball into Parma territory, Spencer connected with Caleb Harris on a 22-yard touchdown reception. Harris caught two balls in the game for 51 yards and the touchdown.
Weiser went into the locker room up 25-0 at the end of the first half after shutting out Parma in the period.
The Wolverines also held the Panthers scoreless in the third period. Weiser scored one touchdown in the third period when Jack Burke ran the ball in from eight yards out for the score. Burke had nine carries for 61 yards in the game.
Parma prevented the shutout with 6:39 left in the fourth quarter. Panther quarterback Joe Shaw found Isaiah Krohn for a 5-yard touchdown pass play. It was too little too late for Parma.
Weiser scored one last rushing touchdown with 4:40 left in the fourth quarter. Tim Reed took the handoff from Spencer and rumbled 23 yards into the endzone. It was Reed’s first touchdown of the season.
Weiser had 372 yards of total offense. Of that, 110 yards were passing and 262 yards were rushing. Weiser scored four touchdowns on the ground and one touchdown on a pass play.
Parma collected 269 yards on offense.
Weiser’s defense forced Parma to fumble twice and recovered them both, along with two interceptions. Kooper von Brethorst, who plays in the secondary, got credit for both Parma interceptions.
Spencer went 7-for-14 on pass attempts for 110 yards, averaging 15.7 yards per pass. He ran the ball 12 times for 64 yards.
The leading rusher for Weiser was Layten Tolman, who had 12 carries for 63 yards. Jack Burke carried the ball 9 times for 61 yards, followed by Willy Shirts, who ran for 32 yards. Tim Reed picked up 28 yards on two carries.
Caleb Harris led receivers with two catches for 51 yards. Von Brethorst caught three passes for 28 yards. Tim Reed also pulled in a Spencer pass for 13 yards.
The Fruitland Grizzlies come to town on Friday night for another SRV Conference game. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.
