Weiser plays tough game against the McCall-Donnelly Vandals in conference action

The Weiser High School boys soccer team played their second conference game on Tuesday, September 22. It was the first game of the season against McCall Donnelly Vandals and proved to be a tough competition.
Play started with a quick attempt for a goal by McCall that was unsuccessful.
Weiser took control of the ball and headed down the field and spent some time near the McCall goal. McCall fouled and gave Weiser the chance to score, but McCall’s defense blocked the goal, as well as several more Weiser attempts over the course of the next few minutes.
Players from McCall guided the ball back to the Weiser goal and took a good shot, but Weiser defender Bryan Juarez protected the goal for no score. The Vandals had a couple more failed attempts on their end of the field before Weiser got the ball back where they wanted it, giving senior Chris Gonzalez a chance to shoot but the Vandal defense kept it out of the goal.
Thirty minutes into the first half, McCall shot the ball toward the goal, but goalkeeper Gabe Rasmussen had an excellent save.
McCall had control of the ball near Weiser’s goal. With players on both teams struggling to get control, Vandal forward Bernard Kindall was able to bounce the ball over and into the goal for a score for McCall.
McCall’s Kindall has been an aggressive shooter for the McCall soccer team, scoring many of their team points for the past several years. Coach Kathy Bokides said, “Jordan Watkins did an excellent job of shutting down #7 (Kindall) for the third straight year.”
Weiser’s defense and strategy against McCall proved successful, as well as frustrating for Kindall, who received a yellow card a few minutes before the end of the first half.
Play in the second half continued to be physical, with lots of contact. Wolverines had several attempts at the goal, but weren’t able to sneak it in. Competition was fierce, and both teams worked hard to get to the goal but no more goals were scored in the game. Ending score was 0-1, McCall.
Coach Bokides praised the team, “The boys really came together as a team against McCall. Only one team error resulted in a goal. Great job team!”
Weiser will face McCall again on September 29, this time on the McCall field.
