Weiser needs win after dropping first district game

Due to an error at Treasure Valley Community College regarding the scheduling, the 2020 3A SRV Girls Basketball District Tournament was delayed from its originally planned commencement date.
Additionally, the locations of the first three games were moved to the home courts of the top-seeded teams in that particular bracket game.
As a result, the Wolverines initial post-season game was held at the home of the Fruitland Grizzlies last weekend.
The Lady Wolverines struggled to get rolling in the first quarter, shooting only 3 for 13 from the field and 2 for 4 from the line. Despite only a 40 percent shooting percentage from the field and a dismal 2 for 7 from the line for the Grizzlies, they still managed to outscore the Wolverines 16-9 in the initial period.
Madison Erickson had a 3-point basket and a free throw and the freshmen contingent of Tobie Noyer and Mattie Shirts each had a basket and Marissa Moyle added a free throw.
Both teams continued to battle defensively into the second quarter resulting in limited shot opportunities on both ends of the court. Both teams attempted only 11 shots a piece.
A basket from behind the arc for Alex Bittinger and baskets from both Moyle and Andrea Bouvia had the Wolverines outscoring the Grizzlies from the field 7-6, but fouls and subsequent points from the line were the key, as the Grizzlies capitalized on 6 of their 9 free throw opportunities, while the Wolverines found the mark on only 1 of 3 free throw attempt.
Trailing 17-28 after the halftime break, the Wolverines stepped up their offensive presence, but the shots simply would not fall. In 21 attempts, the Wolverines hit the mark only 4 times.
Although the defense of the Wolverines held the Grizzlies to only 13 shots, the Grizzlies managed to outscore the Wolverines 13-9 during the third quarter and expand their lead 26-14.
The Lady Wolverines offense continued to work hard in the final period with three baskets from Erickson, two baskets from Moyle, one of which was from behind the 3-point line, and a basket for Bouvia.
However, Wolverine fouls made free throws the key in the fourth quarter with the Grizzlies stepping to the line 12 times for 8 points.  Eleven Grizzlies points from the field, coupled with the free throws, enabled them to outscore the Wolverines 19-15 in the final period and take the game from the Wolverines 60-41, forcing the Wolverines into the consolation bracket.
Although the initial loss was difficult for the Wolverines, the Weiser squad still had an opportunity to work their way back to a berth in the 3A State Basketball Tournament. They faced a must-win situation on Tuesday night. The game results were not available at presstime on Tuesday morning.
Maddy Erickson led the Wolverines with a double-double, 16 points and 10 rebounds, followed by Marissa Moyle with 10 points and 8 rebounds.  Andrea Bouvia added 5 points and 6 rebounds, while Alex Bittinger contributed 3 points and 3 rebounds.  Mattie Shirts and Tobie Noyer were equal with 2 points and 6 rebounds apiece and Ivy Morris had 2 points and 2 rebounds.  Madison Phillips also had 1 point and 2 rebounds.
