Weiser Memorial Foundation announces scholarship winners

Midvale High School senior Helan Hill and University of Idaho student Aline Cortez were recently announced winners of this year’s Weiser Memorial Hospital Foundation scholarship.
Each will receive $1,000 toward their educational goals.
Launched in 2021, the Foundation’s scholarship program is open to students pursuing degrees in the medical field, including nursing, occupational therapy, physical therapy, pharmacy, medicine/medical science (doctors), and more.
Cortez, a 2019 Weiser High School graduate, is currently pursuing a degree from UI in Exercise Sport and Health Science, with an emphasis on Athletic Training.
“I’m so excited to win this scholarship and very grateful to the Foundation for the opportunity,” she told the Weiser Signal American on Monday, May 16. “I have always been passionate about healthcare and in helping those around me. Specifically, growing up in a small town as a student athlete allowed me to see our need for sport medicine care. It was tough needing this immediate attention when athletic trainers in our district were limited.
“That’s why, after graduation, I plan to use my degree as a way to help student athletes in rural communities such as Weiser. I hope to bring the resources that are needed to the new generation of student athletes.”
Part of the aim of the Foundation’s scholarship program is to assist students who plan to return to rural healthcare following completion of their studies.
The money can be used for anything from tuition and books to housing and fees.
“It’s hard for college students to find the financial stability they need to cover tuition and other expenses,” Cortez said. “The eagerness to help and generosity of institutions such as the Weiser Memorial Hospital Foundation ensures that students receive the assistance they need to pursue their healthcare education.
“For this, I am extremely grateful! Receiving this scholarship has given me the opportunity to continue my post-secondary education at the University of Idaho and represent my hometown well.”
Members of the Foundation’s scholarship selection committee said the process of choosing winners can be overwhelming considering the many qualified submissions.
“We were so fortunate to have so many outstanding candidates this year,” said Sally Bouvia, Scholarship Selection Committee Member and Trustee Liaison to the Foundation Board.
“I wish we had funding for every single person that applied. Aline Cortez and Helan Hill both stood out because of their academic performance, extra-curricular activities, and desire to work in a healthcare field and return to a rural area.”
Scholarship Selection Committee Member and Foundation Board Director Linda Youngblood, said she was highly impressed with Hill and Cortez.
“Aline Cortez and Helan Hill exemplified well-rounded students most likely to succeed in a healthcare career,” she said. “It is exciting to see this caliber of students wanting to enter rural healthcare.”
The 2023 scholarship will be open March 1 to April 28, 2023, with winners being announced in early May 2023.
“Additionally, the Foundation plans to award twice as many scholarships next year as we are growing our program,” said WMHF Project Coordinator Kimberly Burgess.
Due to her schedule, which includes graduation preparations, Hill was not immediately available for comment.
