Weiser loses to McCall in first meet of the season

The Weiser Wolverines travelled to McCall to play the Vandals on Friday. The Vandals moved up to the SRV Conference at the beginning of the 2020-21 school year. Strict COVID-19 restrictions has kept McCall from being able to play many of their scheduled games.
Coming into this game, Weiser was 4-2 in conference, McCall 4-0.
Winning the tip-off, Weiser’s Brett Spencer scored quickly with a shot just inside the arc.
On the other end, McCall answered with two points.
After a few trips up the court, Wolverine Tyler Pope made a nice pass to Ruiz who sunk a deep three-pointer to bring the score Weiser 5, McCall 6.
Midway into the first, Spencer hit a three with an assist from Willy Shirts.
After this the Wolverines hit a dry spell and they would not score again until halfway through the second quarter.
The Wolverines played great defense and stopped the Vandals from scoring for the remainder of the first. It ended Weiser 8, McCall 13.
Both teams played solid defense in the second quarter. The first score came two minutes in when the Vandals finally scored on a 3-pointer.
Even though Weiser was playing good defense, McCall was tough to stop from scoring. The Vandals were hot and hit two additional three-pointers.
With four minutes left in the second, Spencer was fouled as he drove to the basket. At the line he was able to convert one of his two free throws, giving Weiser their first score in the second.
This ignited a spark for the Wolverines. Back on offense Weiser’s Evan Haggerty made a great pass to Sam Kerner in the key for a turn-around jumper and two points.
Going into the locker room at half it was Weiser 15, McCall 24.
Weiser struck first in the third quarter with a nice baseline floater by Pope.
The Wolverines playing solid and added two more points on a Spencer fake and step back fade away.
Kerner with a steal, took the ball the length of the court and scored with a lay-in that brought Weiser to within six points.
McCall wisely took a timeout. Whatever they talked about it worked and McCall scored five unanswered points on multiple trips on offense.
Just under 5 minutes to play in the third, Weiser’s Ray Calley hit a nothing but net three from the corner on a baseline inbounds play.
The quarter ended with a little excitement from the Wolverines. A missed shot and the ball flying out of bounds, Ruiz was able to save the ball with a tap back to Michael Youngberg. At the buzzer Youngberg hit a lay-in with the score Weiser 29, McCall 36.
The Wolverines played strong to start the fourth and were able to bring the game to within four points after two minutes in on a Haggerty post up where he made the basket and was fouled. He made his free throw and it was a four point game.
McCall stepped up their game and slowly increased their lead.
With an overabundance of fouls, both teams were in double bonus for the last two minutes of the game. This made for a slow march to the end of the game with multiple trips back and forth to the free throw line.
Late in the fourth, Haggerty made a baseline pass to the far corner where Spencer was waiting and sunk a three-pointer. Weiser was back within six points.
A few more trips to the line, McCall closed out the game with McCall taking the 10 point win 57-47.
 Weiser scoring: Spencer 18, Ruiz 9, Kerner 5, Haggerty 4, Pope 4, Youngberg 4, Calley 3.
