Weiser keeps it close in loss to Homedale

Weiser’s Hailey Pearson goes up to hit a shot back over the net during a match with the visiting Homedale Trojans on Sept. 27. Ready to assist are No. 1 Macy Beuscher, Macy Moore, Sara Lundberg, No. 3 Grace Soulen and No. 10 Reagan Doty. The Lady Wolverines were competitive in all three sets, and even took an early lead, but could not close out a win and dropped the match. Sara Lundberg led the Wolverines with 23 kills. The Lady Wolverines hosted the league match-up against the Lady Trojans of Homedale last week.
The Wolverines played great and appeared to have it all together, but could not close out any of the sets in the final moments and lost all three sets 21-25, 22-25 and 27-29.
The Wolverines and the Trojans went two-to-two in the first set, trading points with no real leader until the 12-12 point.  The Trojans served an ace, and the Wolverines faltered somewhat, allowing the Trojans to jump to a 15-12 lead.
However, a series of Trojan errors and a beautiful stuff block by Reagan Doty and Grace Soulen, pulled the Wolverines even at 16-16.
Despite the momentum behind the comeback, the Wolverines struggled with passing and accuracy, allowing the Trojans to go on a 5-1 scoring run.
A kill by Sara Lundberg put Macy Moore behind the line. A pair of Lundberg kills kept the Wolverines in the set, but the Weiser ladies were unable to finish it out and lost the first set 25-21.
The Wolverines started out strong in the second set, jumping to a 6-3 lead off of two kills and a pair of aces. The Trojans rallied back to tie the score at 7-7, and with great plays on both sides of the court and strong blocking by Doty, the set was a trading game until 9-9 when the Wolverines began to pull away.
Soulen recorded a kill and an ace, while LynnZ Rasmussen and Lundberg collaborated on a stuff block. Lundberg also added a trio of kills to her tally, giving the Lady Wolverines a 16-12 lead.
The Wolverines kept working hard and Doty was relentless at the net, getting a gorgeous stuff block against the strong Trojan hitters and increased the Wolverine lead 20-14.  Despite the Wolverine charge, they let down their guard prematurely, and a series of Wolverine ball handling errors coupled with a pair of Trojan kills allowed the Trojans to catch up on the scoreboard and surpass the Wolverines 23-21.
Soulen caused a side out with a hard kill to give the Wolverines another opportunity but there was too much ground to make up and the Trojans took the second set 25-22.
With a sweep looming for the Wolverines, they needed to maintain their momentum from beginning to end. Again, the Wolverines started out the set with determination and excitement taking the early 6-2 lead with the help of consistent serving and four kills by Lundberg. Doty continued to be a force at the net both offensively and defensively, recording two kills and getting up for the block at every opportunity.
With only a slight 9-8 lead, Soulen took over serving for the Wolverines, and pulled the Wolverines further ahead 12-8.
The Wolverines had some long rallies and made some great plays, but a long serve by the Wolverines began a momentum shift of serving errors, coverage gaps and hitting errors. Before the Wolverines were able to regroup, the Trojans had again bridged the scoring gap and tied the set 17-17.
Another stuff block by Doty allowed Soulen to serve up an ace to the Trojans, but an out-of-bounds call put the ball back in the hands of the Trojans.
Once again in the waning moments of the set, the Wolverines faltered and seemed to lose their focus.  The Trojans took the lead 23-19, but the Wolverines found their mojo again with a tip kill by Doty.  Moore served up an ace to pull within one point at 22-23, but a bad pass gave the Trojans a chance to close out the set 23-24.
An extremely long and physical rally on match point culminated with a kill by Lundberg off of the block.  Set point and match point was called and traded multiple times during the next few points, but despite some great play, the Wolverines just couldn’t shut the door on the third set and the Trojans took the set 29-27 and the match 3-0
Lundberg led the Wolverines with 23 kills, 1 block and 2 aces, followed by Soulen with 5 kills, 1 block and 3 aces. Doty added 4 kills and 4 blocks, and Moore had 2 aces.
