Weiser hosts Melba in non-conference contest

The Lady Wolverines hosted the Melba Mustangs in a pre-Thanksgiving, non-conference pairing last week.
Unfortunately, the Wolverines continue to seek out their elusive first win of the season, despite a “really good first half,” according to varsity head coach Laraine Harrison. The Wolverines lost the game 38-70.
The Wolverines have struggled of late with shot selection resulting in poor shooting percentages, but during the first quarter against the Mustangs, the Wolverines shot 50 percent from the field, a vast improvement from previous games.
Andrea Bouvia was 100 percent from both the field and the foul line during the quarter, sinking a 2-point and a 3-point bucket as well as a free throw.
Maddy Erickson added four of the Wolverines’ points during the period, and Mattie Shirts had one basket for a 12-point total.
The Mustangs inched out a lead over the Wolverines with 13-points, despite only shooting 5 for 14 from the field.
The Wolverines were unable to get many good looks at the basket during the second quarter and of the 11 Wolverine attempts, Marissa Moyle, Alex Bittinger and Erickson were the only Wolverines to find any success from the field, with a basket apiece. The Wolverines did, however, add four free throws from Bouvia, Erickson and Shirts.
Despite the Wolverines 10 points in the period, free throws allowed the Mustangs to outscore the Wolverines 14-10 for a 27-22 lead at the half.
The Wolverines typically come out from the halftime break with a new energized vigor, but that was not the case against the Mustangs. The Wolverines struggled with finding a clear shot. Offensive woes, coupled with defensive breakdowns, allowed the Mustangs to outscore the Wolverines 17-6 in the third quarter.
The Wolverine shooting was a bit more successful during the final period, with Bouvia and Erickson combining for 6 points. Jenifer Juarez and Rhianna Soliz came up with 2 points each for a total of 10 Wolverine points.
However, the offensive mojo that the Wolverines had been searching for unfortunately landed in the area of the Mustangs during the fourth quarter. The Mustangs hit 10 of their 16 shots and was 75 percent from the line for a total of 26-points to take the win 70-38 from the Wolverines.
Maddy Erickson led the Wolverines with 13-points and 7 rebounds, followed by Andrea Bouvia with 10-points and 1 rebound. Mattie Shirts added 7-points and 7 rebounds, while Marissa Moyle had 2-points and 6 rebounds. Alex Bittinger, Jenifer Juarez and Rhianna Soliz had 2-points apiece and Madison Phillips had 4 rebounds.
The junior varsity squad was also unable to get into the win column with a 41-31 loss to the Mustangs.
