Weiser High School wrestling team is preparing for a successful season

The Weiser High School wrestling team will return 20 wrestlers for the 2020-21 season. Six seniors, Kooper von Brethorst, Eric Torres, Dillon Houser, Boone Kziasek, Max Kingsbury and Elijah Carter will lead the team. This year’s schedule is in flux due to COVID-19 precautions but the boys continue to be focused and ready for a great wrestling season. Weiser wrestling is back in action for the upcoming 2020-21 season.
Many of the wrestling tournaments that the team normally participates in have been cancelled due to COVID-19. Weiser normally travels to several towns in Oregon to prepare before starting their conference season however, Oregon has cancelled wrestling for the time being.
Weiser has been practicing for a couple of weeks. Their first meet was scheduled for the Bucks Bags tournament in Post Falls on Dec. 4-5 but due to safety precautions was cancelled.
The wrestling team will be traveling to Jerome for a tournament on Friday.
So far the weight classes look to be in good shape with many returning wrestlers and some newcomers. Eighteen to 20 wrestlers are returning for the season and many are names who showed up at state for Weiser last year.
Billy and Bobby Nevarez, Aaron Despain, Rafael Delgadillo and Jace Buescher all return in the lower weights.  Kooper von Brethorst, Eric Torres, Tanner Colvin, Clayton and Stetson Beesley, Max Kingsbury, Dillon Houser, and Malachi Hoobery round out the middleweights for Weiser. Calvin Clapperton, Boone Kziasek, Rylee Willet, Jesse Lockett, Elijah Carter, Triston McMahill, and Oscar Cruz return to help the heavier weights.
Weiser is taking their season day by day this year because of the pandemic and is really just focused on day to day business in the wrestling room.
“We could look forward through the season all we want and believe me, I want to,” Head Coach Drew Dickerson said, “but we need to stay focused on what is happening today and enjoy every opportunity that we have to wrestle.”
Weiser does have six seniors who are super focused on this season and are trying to position themselves to place at the state competition. Seniors include Kooper von Brethorst, Eric Torres, Dillon Houser, Boone Kziasek, Max Kingsbury, and Elijah Carter.
“This is a smaller senior group than the past couple of years however these young men are pretty determined to leave their mark on Wolverine wrestling this year,” Coach Dickerson stated.
Drew Dickerson will lead the team this year along with assistant coaches Chad Gibson and Chris Willet.  The team also has the help and support of some former Wolverine wrestlers who have been coming into the gym to keep them on their toes and show them some different wrestling opponents.
This season has the potential to be an exciting one with the level of wrestling that the team is currently at.
In the past few years, Coach Drew Dickerson has been able to place some of his wrestlers at the collegiate level which is great for the Weiser wrestling program.
“Most wrestlers don’t just come out and start wrestling at the high school level,” Coach Dickerson explained. “Wrestling starts with the youth program and the more you wrestle the more you know when you are at the high school level. Many of the young men that I have in my wrestling room have been in my youth programs and still help with them today.”
Just a reminder to all wrestling fans that as of now we will have to read results in the newspaper or follow Weiser wrestling on trackwrestling.com as no one will be able to be admitted to any wrestling matches in our area due to pandemic restrictions.
 Go Wolverines!
