Weiser High School wrestlers earn district title

Weiser Wolverine wrestlers were once again crowned District III champions on Saturday at Homedale. Weiser scored a record-setting 409 points to win the championship.  
 Just to show the prowess of the Wolverines versus the competition, Fruitland scored a mere 187 points to finish in second place. Weiser had six first place finishes, scoring 142.5 of the 409 points for Weiser.  
 Weiser will be taking two “dirty dozen” wrestlers to state this Friday, Feb. 28, at the Idaho Center in Nampa. Each wrestler placing first through fourth for the Wolverines received an automatic berth to the state tournament.  
 Weiser also had a wildcard berth of a fifth place finisher to round out the two dozen. It has been quite some time since the Wolverine wrestling squad took this many wrestlers to state.       “Taking a ‘dirty two dozen’ to the state tournament is quite an accomplishment for Weiser wrestling. These boys have worked hard in and out of the wrestling room and their work is starting to pay off,” coach Drew Dickerson said.  “If we can stay tough through the next week of practice and handle whatever adversity the tournament throws at us, we have a shot at some hardware coming home.”
 District tournament results were:
 First place:  Rafael Delgadillo, 113 pounds; Conor Marsh, 120 pounds; Kooper von Brethorst, 126 pounds; Matt Morris, 152 pounds; Malachi Hoobery, 170 pounds; Rylee Willet, 195 pounds.
 Second place: Mason Strong, 120 pounds; Ander Barbot, 132 pounds; Robert Sudderth, 152 pounds; Boone Kziasek, 160 pounds; Oscar Cruz, 195 pounds; Jesse Lockett, 220 pounds.
 Third place: Bobby Nevarez, 98 pounds; Aaron Despain, 106 pounds; Justin Williamson, 126 pounds; Justin Petersen, 132 pounds; Braden Edwards, 138 pounds; Stetson Beesley, 182 pounds; Elijah Carter, 220 pounds.
 Fourth place: Max Kingsbury, 152 pounds; Clayton Beesley, 160 pounds; Calvin Clapperton, 182 pounds; Tristan McMahill, 285 pounds.
