The Weiser High School varsity tennis team qualified 15 players for the 3A State Championships after placing in every event at the SRV District Tournament last week.
Weiser tennis coach Angie Soulen said it’s the most players Weiser has ever sent to state.
In team scores, the Weiser girls placed second with 53 points. Parma took first place with 64.5 points, and Fruitland finished in third place with 43 points.
The Weiser boys tied with Fruitland for the SRV District team title with 52 points each but were bumped to second place based on a state scoring rule.
If there is a tie, the number of entries in championship matches is counted. Fruitland had two entires in the finals, one in singles and one in mixed doubles. Weiser had one entry in the finals in boys doubles, so Fruitland took first place and Weiser came in second.
The Weiser girls singles players came ready to compete and took first and second place at the district tournament.
No. 1 singles player Grace Soulen was unbeatable and did not lose a match. In the quarterfinals, Soulen beat Sammy Del Valle of Payette without giving up a game, 6-0, 6-0. In the semi-finals Soulen, who was the No. 1 seed in the district tournament, got the win over Parma’s Angel Salinas 6-0, 6-4.
She ended up playing Weiser’s No. 2 girls singles player Andrea Bouvia in the finals for the district. Bouvia also won all of her matches to get to the championship. Soulen claimed the SRV District singles title with a straight set win over Bouvia, 6-2, 6-1.

Isaac To’omalatai lost his second match but battled back through the consolation bracket to finish in third place. No. 1 singles player Bryce Bake took fourth place and Eli To’omalatai placed fifth.
In boys doubles, Weiser’s No. 1 boys team of  Matthew Westover and Kelvin Price won their first two matches after an opening round bye to make it to the finals, where they placed second to Parma.
The Weiser duo easily got the win over the Payette doubles team 6-2, 6-1 in the quarterfinals. Westover and Price won in the semi-finals by beating the Fruitland team 6-2, 6-2 to make it to the finals, where they lost to a strong doubles team from Parma 1-6, 3-6.
Weiser’s No. 2 doubles team placed fourth. Karson Brush and Layton Tolman received a bye in the opening round and beat Fruitland’s No. 2 team in the quarterfinals in three sets, 6-1, 3-6, 6-2. Brush and Tolman faced the tough doubles team from Parma in the semi-final match and lost 1-6, 1-6. They beat Parma in the consolations to take fouth place.
Weiser’s two girls doubles teams finished the district tournament in the fourth and fifth spots.
The No. 1 doubles team of Sienna McClellan and Brooke Anderson lost to Fruitland’s No. 1 doubles team 2-6, 4-6 after a first round bye. The Weiser duo came back to win three matches in the consolation bracket to take fourth place.
Weiser’s No. 2 girls doubles team of Denica McClellan and Emma Tolman won their first match over Payette 6-0, 6-1 but fell to Parma’s No. 1 girls doubles team, 1-6, 0-6. They were able to pick up a win in the consolation bracket over Fruitland to finish in fifth place.
In mixed doubles, Weiser’s No. 1 team of Bentley Weldon and Pedro Ixta finished in fifth place. After receiving a bye, the Weiser team played a long and competitive three-set match against the No. 2 Parma team. Weiser won the first set 7-5 but then dropped the next two sets 6-7, 1-6.
