Weiser High School graduate Brody Von Brethorst receives scholarship from Third District Officials Association

 It was just announced that Weiser High School senior Brody von Brethorst, a member of the Class of 2019, was awarded the Bill Herr Memorial Scholarship.

 The $750 scholarship is given every year to one boy and one girl by the Third District Officials Association, an organization of nearly 500 referees, umpires and others who officiate the seven major high school sports in the region. There are more than 50 high schools in the district.

 The scholarship is named after Bill Herr, a longtime referee and former commissioner.

 Officials said they received 48 applications this year for the scholarships. The awards are based on scholastic achievement, sports, community involvement and other criteria. Students must participate in an activity sponsored by the IHSAA or the OHSAA.

 “All of these kids were absolutely outstanding,” said Doug Gochnour, who serves on the association’s board.
