Weiser High School cheerleaders best in state

The Weiser High School cheerleaders ended their short but exciting competition season with a very exciting state tournament on Saturday at the Ford Idaho Center.
The squad earned top honors for academics and all-girl show routine and pom routine. With a second place finish in sideline routine, Weiser earned the top spot overall, making the Weiser Wolverine cheerleaders the state champions of 2019.
The first competition was pom routine, which is a one-minute dance with changing formations and pom passes. Weiser typically shines in this event. The judges praised the Wolverines for sharp arm movements, movement and speed in transitions, and overall fun energy.
The competition was fierce, however, with the Wolverines earning the top score by 0.5 points just ahead of American Falls.
American Falls and Sugar Salem were clearly once again Weiser’s biggest all-around competition, but as both those teams were competing as co-ed teams, show-cheer is usually Weiser’s best event, with the team having won first place for the last several years. Weiser showed their consistency and talent and put the routine on the floor with one small timing bobble.
This was Weiser’s hardest show routine ever with six individual heel stretches with full down dismounts and a kick-full basket toss. Once again, Weiser proved themselves the top all-girl squad in the state as they received high points from the judges for energy, difficulty of stunting, and the cheer within the show routine.
The final routine of the day was the sideline competition. Weiser earned good comments from the judges once again for the energy and crowd involvement, earning second place, just a few points behind Sugar-Salem.
The squad also brought home the coveted academic state championship. The team earned an impressive combined GPA of 3.77, earning them this honor for the fourth year in a row. Coach Jennifer Weldon said that this award is really special and she is incredibly proud that the team is strong and diligent in the classroom as well as on the mat.
At the end of the night, Weiser had no idea how the results would all play out. Sugar-Salem, American Falls had also both put three solid routines on the floor, and it’s impossible to tell what the judges will like.
The winner for the all-around state championship is determined through a placement system, similar to track and field, for each first place win, the team earns 10 points, while for each second place spot the team earns 8 points, and for each third place position, the team earns 6 points.
Weiser earned 10 points for their first place in pom, 10 for their first place in all-girl show cheer, and 8 for their second place in sideline. Sugar Salem took first in sideline, and first in co-ed show cheer, but because they took third place in pom, they earned 2 less placement points for their third event, giving the Wolverines the edge to win, with American Falls taking a close third behind the Wolverines and the Diggers.
“These are the hardest routines I have ever put on the floor and the competition in the 3A division was fierce. Sugar-Salem and American Falls are both lights out. The competition was as close as it could be and it’s an honor to be on top.  I am incredibly proud,” Weldon said.
Weldon also said that the season would not have been possible without the support of the Weiser High School administration. The support from Mr. Davies, Mr. Dickerson and Mr. Grant, along with the student body and the rest of the WHS staff, has been incredible, she said.
Along with the student body, the support of the Weiser community had the girls in awe. Several of the parents were able to put together state goody bags with donations from several of the Weiser businesses and individuals and the crowd at the state competition was full of Weiser people with and without students in cheer.
“My squad is incredible because they are incredible both on and off the mat and a lot of that comes from their amazing support system. I feel very blessed and grateful,” Weldon said.
Senior and four-year cheerleader Emilly Perez said that the feeling of hearing the squad announced as state champions is truly indescribable, and it has been an honor to have heard that twice during her high school years.
“We all pushed ourselves this year and it’s been hard but it was definitely worth it. It’s so awesome to end my last year with a bang and I’m so thankful to have been on such an amazing team with wonderful ladies for the past four years,” Perez said.
Congratulations to the Wolverine cheerleaders – your 2019 State Champions.
