Weiser has a hot night hitting against Caldwell

Weiser baseball hosted Caldwell Monday night in a short contest that ended with Weiser showing the prowess and ending the game in the fifth inning 13-1.
Willy Shirts was a name that the Caldwell Cougars won’t be forgetting any time soon. Shirts pitched four innings for the Wolverines and gave up only four hits and one run during his time on the mound. He also didn’t have a single walk and struck out five batters. If that wasn’t enough, Shirts also had five RBI’s during the contest and had three hits as well. Two of those hits were doubles.
“Shirts hit the ball well tonight and pitched well.  We had a lot of guys hitting the ball and working hard on defense tonight. It is nice to see them rewarded for the work that they put into the game,” head coach Bowe von Brethorst said.
Jack Burke also had a great offensive day for the Wolverines with three hits as well and one of those a double.
Nine Wolverines tallied hits for the Wolverines totaling 16.  Weiser’s cumulative batting average for the evening was .615 which is impressive for a high school baseball game.
Starting out the game the Wolverines had three outs in the first four Caldwell batters with only one of them reaching on an error in the infield. In the bottom of the first inning, Kooper von Brethorst led off and hit a double and advanced to third as Ray Calley laid down a nice bunt. Brett Spencer was working a nice count when the Caldwell pitcher threw a wild pitch and von Brethorst took advantage and scored. Spencer would fly out to the catcher. Beau Shields hit a nice single to get on base. Shirts hit one of his two doubles and scored Shields.  Eric Torres came in to run for Shirts and Tyler Pope quickly moved him to third base with a nice double to left field.
Jarret Mink was up to hit next and added to the score with a single that scored both Torres and Pope. The inning ended with a pop-up, taking the game to the second inning.
No defense could stop a hard-hit grounder down the third baseline to give Caldwell a runner on first, but the Wolverines stopped Caldwell with a ground out and two strikeouts.
Burke, von Brethorst and Calley loaded the bases in the bottom of the second inning.  Burke would end up stealing home and another pop-up would leave von Brethorst and Calley on second and first base respectively.  Shields was hit by a pitch to once again load the bases. Von Brethorst capitalized on an error by the catcher to score. Shirts came to the plate and hit a single and scored Calley and Shields, but Shirts would be left on base to end the second inning.
Weiser held Caldwell to a single hit during the top of the third inning and wouldn’t be able to get anything going on offense in the bottom of the third.
In the fourth inning, it was a little of the same for Caldwell who had two hits, a ground out, and two strikeouts before turning it over to the Wolverines.
Calley started off with a base hit followed by Spencer with a nice ground-rule double that bounced once and went over the centerfield fence. Shields hit a hard grounder to the third baseman who was able to stop the ball catching Calley in a pickle between third and home and he was thrown out. Shirts came to the plate and hit his second double of the night scoring both Spencer and Shields.  Shirts would steal third and score when Mink hit a nice single to second base.  Payton Albertson came in and hit a single to left field and then Burke came up again and hit a double to left field scoring both Mink and Albertson.
In the top of the fifth inning, the Wolverines would put in Tyler Pope to close out the game. Pope had an efficient inning facing just four batters.  Two pop-ups and a ground out and Weiser clinched the game 13-1.
The Wolverines had only one error recorded during the game and no walks which were the two things the Wolverines improved on from the previous week.
