The Weiser High School girls and boys varsity golf teams are headed to the 3A state championships this weekend after placing first and second at the SRV District tournament on Monday at Rolling Hills Golf Course.
The Weiser boys earned a trip to state by a single stroke, a razor-thin margin of victory over Homedale. The Wolverines shot a team score of 358 over 18 holes, one shot better than the Trojans’ score of 359.
The nail-biter of a finish between Weiser and Homedale was close enough that coaches and athletic directors huddled at the clubhouse to do a second count of the team scores. The first and second-place finishers for both the boys and girls earned spots at state.
Fruitland took the SRV District title for the boys with an even 300 for the round. Grizzly golfer Jake O’Neil had a round of 70 (two shots under par) to take medalist honors for the best score of the afternoon.
The Weiser varsity girls capped another winning season with a team score of 374 for 18 holes, easily clinching the SRV District tourney by 41 shots over the runner-up. The Homedale girls finished in second place with a team score of 415. Payette finished in third place with a score of 439.
The high school golfers made two trips around the nine-hole Rolling Hills GC to get in 18 holes on a warm and sunny day in Weiser. A slight breeze required the golfers to make some adjustments out on the course.
Weiser coach Jon Lundberg said it was a great day for the Wolverines on their home golf course.
“All 10 players gave it their all for six hours. Many played better the second nine holes because of their mental toughness and that made the difference, especially for the boys,” he said.
“I would like to thank all the people who helped make this day so great. My rules committee, Jim Eaton and Joe Malay, all the markers who helped get scores accurate and all the generous people who let us use their golf carts.”
Weiser’s Sara Lundberg took medalist honors for the best score of the girls. She carded an 80 for the 18 holes. Homedale’s Tea Uranga had the second-best round with a score of 84.
Third place among the individual girls was decided by a sudden death playoff between Weiser’s Sydnee Reyes and Fruitland’s Hannah Foss. Both girls finished the day with scores of 89, forcing the playoff for third and a medal. Third place went to Foss on the second hole of the playoff.
A playoff was also required to decide second place among the individual boys. Both Homedale’s Daniel Uranga and Fruitland’s Jonas Bicknese finished with a score of 74. Uranga took second place by beating Bicknese in a one-hole playoff.
For the Weiser varsity boys, Caden Cramer led the Wolverines with a round of 85. Mikaid Wall, Abe Konvalin, Justin Estes and Chris Lee all finished with scores of 91.
Estes said it wasn’t his best round at Rolling Hills and he could have done better. His drives were not quite on target, he said. Estes and all the boys were excited about qualifying for state and joining the competition for the 3A title.
Sara Lundberg’s round of 80 paced the Weiser girls. Sydnee Reyes finished with a score of 89, followed by Stella Beams, who carded a 99. Faith Lee and Ciana Fuller rounded out the scoring for Weiser with rounds of 106 and 107.
The 3A State Championship will be held this weekend at the Twin Falls Golf Course. Saturday is practice and competition is Monday and Tuesday.
