Weiser girls place first at SRV track meet at Payette

First-place finishes in the 100-meter hurdles, 200 meters and 400 meters and discus and shot put, along with other events, vaulted the Weiser High School girls to a first place finish at the SRV Conference track meet at Payette last week.
    The Weiser girls took the top spot among the five conference teams competing at the meet. Fruitland finished in second place and Parma came in third.
    The Weiser boys finished in the runner-up spot to Fruitland. The Homedale Trojans took third place at the meet.
    Weiser coach Dave Shirts said the Weiser girls were neck and neck with Fruitland in team points throughout the day. The boys also performed well, he said.
    “We had lots of athletes step up with a lot of personal records last week.  We are looking to continually improve through the district and state meet.  The Bishop Kelly meet this weekend will be a good challenge for us,” he said.
    In the girls 100 meters, a race dominated by Fruitland, Weiser girls had two top 10 finishes. Freshman SeAnna Jones had a personal best time of 14.25 seconds and finished in eighth place. Teammate Marissa Moyle tied for 10th place with a season-best time for her of 14.37 seconds.
    In the 200 meters, Abbey Shirts finished ahead of the pack for first place. Shirts has specialized in the 400 meters this season. She had a personal record time in the 200 meters of 26.86 seconds. The Fruitland girls finished in six of the top eight spots.
    In the 400 meters, Shirts picked up her second win of the day, finishing in first place and nearly three seconds in front of runner-up Maggie Johnson of Homedale. Shirts finished in 1:00.44, while Johnson crossed the finish line in 1:03.76.
    Other Weiser girls in the top 10 in the 400 meters included: Alyssa Olvera (1:08.32, fourth), Suzanne Cannon (1:12.33, sixth), Samantha Despain (1:12.41, seventh) and Marissa Moyle (1:14.11, 10th).
    In the 1,600 meters, Bella Strasser finished in sixth place for Weiser with a time of 6:30.45. Freshmen Kiearra Hoobery and Makaela Sherry finished eighth and ninth, respectively, with times of 6:41.58 and 6:49.56.
    In the 3,200 meters, Weiser had four girls finish in the top 10. Makaela Sherry took second place with a personal record time of 13:59.58, followed by Kiearra Hoobery in third place with a time of 14:00.91, another personal record. Alonna Freeland finished in sixth place (17:51.01) and Jaclyn Dunn finished in seventh place (19:04.00).
    In the 100-meter hurdles, Weiser dominated the race by taking three of the top four places. Junior Jade Simonsen won the race with a personal record time of 17.08 seconds. Ellie Walker placed third (18.22 seconds) and Samantha Despain finished in fourth place (20.82).
    In the 300-meter hurdles, Ellie Walker finished second for Weiser (51.42 seconds) and Jade Simonsen took fourth place (55.54 seconds).
    The Weiser girls placed second in the 4x100-meter relay, third in the 4x200 meters and second in the 4x400-meter relay. The girls finished in third place in the SMR 100-100-200-400 meters.
    In track events, Sheyanne Hilmer had a big day, winning both the shot put and discus for Weiser. She won the shot put with a throw of 30 feet, 7.5 inches. A number of Wolverines finished in the top 10 in the shot put, including Judith Rios (27 feet, 1 inch, fifth), Ellie Eames (26 feet, 1.5 inches, sixth), Grace Arnold (24 feet, 11 inches, ninth) and Yerika Marquez (24 feet, 10.5 inches, 10th).
    In the discus, Hilmer’s winning toss was 99 feet, 11 inches, more than two feet farther than runner-up Isabel Jacobs of Homedale, who threw the discus 97 feet, 1.50 inches. Yerika Marquez finished fifth for Weiser (89 feet, 6.5 inches) and Judith Rios finished in eighth place (73 feet, 8.5 inches).
    In the high jump, Weiser’s LynnZ Rasmussen cleared 4 feet, 4 inches for second place. Victoria Wyss finished in fifth place with a jump of 4 feet, 2 inches.
    The Weiser girls put in a strong showing in the pole vault, taking five of the top six spots including first place. Abbey Shirts won the event with a vault of 9 feet, 6 inches. Victoria Wyss and Reagan Doty tied for third place with vaults of 8 feet, 6 inches. LynnZ Rasmussen finished in fifth place and Jade Simonsen came in sixth place.
    In the long jump, Weiser’s Bella Strasser took third place (13 feet, 6 inches). Other top 10 Weiser finishers included: Kaija Sanchez (13 feet, 5 inches, fourth), Victoria Wyss (13 feet, 3.5 inches, sixth), Ashlyn Walker (11 feet, 11.5 inches, eighth) and Ruby Sanchez (11 feet, 10 inches, 10th).
    Weiser’s Ellie Walker placed first in the triple jump with a jump of 32 feet. Bella Strasser finished eighth with a jump of 28 feet, 1.5 inches.
    For the Weiser boys, Anderson Jensen finished in ninth place in the 100 meters with a time of 12.19 seconds, while Triston Kautz put in another strong performance in the 200 meters with a second-place finish in 24.13 seconds.
    In the 400 meters, Weiser Rhett Kunz ran his fastest race of the season for the win. Kunz had a time of 51.58 seconds. Other Weiser finishers included: Guillermo Cobos (56.34, fifth), Anderson Jensen (56.98, seventh), Cameron Hagans (57.15, eighth).
    In the 800 meters, Nathan Turner earned Weiser points with a second-place finish. He ran the race in 2:09.10. The Fruitland team placed seven runners in the top 10 spots.
    In the 1,600 meters, Guillermo Cobos took sixth place with a time of 5:07.21. Logan Ankarberg came in 10th with a time of 5:35.69.
    In the 110 meter hurdles, Nick Swank placed third for Weiser with a time of 17.58 seconds. Travis Schimmel took seventh place with a time of 35.94 seconds.
    For the second meet in a row, Weiser’s Braden Bumgarner won the 300 meter hurdles. He had a personal record time of 42.87 seconds. Nick Swank placed third with a time of 44.88 seconds.
    In the relay races, Weiser placed fourth in the 4x100, second in the 4x200 and the team of Bumgarner, Triston Kautz, Nathan Turner and Rhett Kunz placed first in the 4x400 with a time of 3:38.04.
    In the SMR 1,600 meters, the team of Triston Kautz, Jordan Watkins, Braden Bumgarner and Rhett Kunz placed first with a time of 3:53.82.
    In the field events, Angel Magana tied for sixth place in the shot put with a toss of 36 feet, 2 inches. He tied for 10th place in the discus with a throw of 91 feet, 3 inches.
    In the high jump, Weiser’s Nick Swank took second by clearing 5 feet, 10 inches. Travis Schimmel placed seventh in the pole vault with a vault of 8 feet.
    In the long jump, Jordan Watkins placed fourth with a jump of 17 feet, 11 inches. Rolando Lopez tied for seventh place with a jump of 16 feet, 1.5 inches.
    Watkins won the triple jump with a jump of 36 feet, 7.75 inches. Nate Turner was third with a jump of 35 feet, 10.5 inches. Alex Pena was eighth (33 feet, 9 inches) and Koen Webb tied for 10th (32 feet, .5 inches.).
