Weiser girls fall short at New Plymouth 52-41

The Lady Wolverines traveled to the home of the New Plymouth Lady Pilgrims for a non-conference pairing last week, and despite their hard work on the court dropped the game 41-52.
Junior Maddy Erickson was on the mark during the first quarter with 6 points. Mattie Shirts and Andrea Bouvia each added a basket for 10 points, but a trio of free throws for the Pilgrims put them ahead 13-10 at the end of the period.
Fouls were abundant in the second period, leading to numerous free throw opportunities for both squads. Alex Bittinger shot 2 for 5, and Madison Phillips and Erickson were both 1 for 2 from the line for a total of four Wolverine points.
The Pilgrims were 6 for 9 from the charity stripe and they also added 8 points from the field.  However, the Wolverines were only successful on one 3 point basket by Bouvia in 13 attempts from the field. The scoring struggles obviously took its toll and at the halftime break the Wolverines were trailing 17-27.
The Wolverines came out after halftime with a bit more energy, especially on the defensive side, holding the Pilgrims to a mere eight shot opportunities.
However, the Pilgrims were successful in five of those attempts. The Wolverines also kept their fouls to a minimum, allowing only one Pilgrim free throw during the period.
Marissa Moyle and Mattie Shirts both added a basket apiece, while Erickson added a 2 point bucket as well as a shot from 3 point land.  Ivy Morris shot 100 percent from the free throw line and Moyle and Bouvia each added 1-point from the line.
Although the Wolverines outscored the Pilgrims 13-12 during the third quarter, the Wolverines continued to be plagued by shot selection, shooting only 4 for 16 from the field and continued to trail the Pilgrims 30-39.
Erickson and Moyle had 4-points apiece in the final period. Morris added another free throw to her credit and Shirts again showed her dominance from the line with 2 points.
The scoring successes of the Pilgrims began to falter in the fourth quarter, only recording 6 points in 15 attempts, but Wolverine fouls placed the Pilgrims on the line 10 times, whereas they were able to capitalize on seven of the opportunities and maintain their lead to take the game 52-41.
Maddy Erickson led the Lady Wolverines with 14 points and 8 rebounds, followed by Mattie Shirts with 8 points and 6 rebounds.  Marissa Moyle contributed 7 points and was outstanding on the boards with 14 rebounds; 44 percent of the total Wolverine rebounds.
Andrea Bouvia added 6 points and 2 rebounds and Ivy Morris recorded 3 points and 2 rebounds. Alex Bittinger had 2 points and Madison Phillips had 1 point.
