Weiser girls earn trip to state with win over Parma

The runner-up game of the SRV District Tournament to determine the final District 3 team to qualify for the 3A state championships proved to be an edge-of-your-seat contest against the Lady Wolverines and the Parma Panthers.
The first set was a battle with the Panthers and the Wolverines trading points throughout the set with the largest point differential being four points. The lead for Parma would not last long.
Reagan Doty served an ace to tie up the score at 18 and Grace Soulen added a point with a hard kill. Riley Warner placed a shot into the open middle to bring Weiser up 20-18. With the score at 24-22, Soulen went to the service line and with the help of a collaborative stuff block by Warner and Whitney Cordes, the Lady Wolverines took the first match 25-22.
The battle continued into the second set.  Soulen served two aces to give Weiser an early 4-2 lead to start the second match. The Wolverines clearly had momentum on their side and the Panthers were visibly rattled when Macey Buescher began serving and served two aces to give Weiser a 12-10 lead. Ciana Fuller served for three, aided by a Wolverine stuff block and an ace to bring the score to 16-13.
Weiser held Parma scoreless at the 18-point mark and Doty served the final five points with help by a great defensive dig by Buescher, a block by Ivy Morris and Jasi Yraguen and a service ace. Weiser dominated the set with their hard hitting, skillfully placed shots and strong serving to take the second match 25-18.
The Wolverines came out strong to begin the third set, hoping to take the match in three and staying in the lead until the 22-19 mark. However, the momentum of the set shifted when the Panthers went on a 5-point scoring run and took a 24-23 lead.
Soulen recorded a kill to bring the Lady Wolverines to set point but Parma tied it up for the next five points. With the score tied at 29, Parma scored their final two points to end the game at 31-29. The Panthers also took the fourth set 25-19 to force the fifth set to 15.
Parma came out strong scoring 3 early points, but a hard kill by Soulen gave Weiser the side-out and their first point. Morris gave Weiser their first lead of the set, serving for 3-points bringing the score to 7-6.  Long rallies and scrappy play kept the Wolverines in the fight and they never gave up on themselves or their fan following.
Parma was setting at set and match point (10-14) when Soulen delivered a hard kill to give the Wolverines the side out. Soulen then served for 6 consecutive points to finish out the rest of the game. Doty helped keep Soulen behind the service line with her hard hits in the front row and finishing the set 16-14 and the match 3-2, earning a berth at the Idaho 3A volleyball championships in Coeur d’Alene.
