Weiser girls battle to 44-41 win over Ontario
The Lady Wolverines traveled to the home of the Ontario Tigers on Dec. 16 for a non-conference pairing that was rescheduled from two weeks ago.
The Weiser ladies shined in the postponed opportunity, taking the game 44-41 to grab their second win of the season.
The Lady Wolverines wasted no time implementing their full-court press, resulting in turnovers and critical transition baskets.
According to coach, Laraine Harrison, “Our defense is becoming our identity.”
Evidence of their defensive presence resulted in a 14-5 lead over the Tigers. Andrea Bouvia was successful with several steals and fast break opportunities, resulting in 7 points in the first quarter. Macy Moore, Maddy Erickson and Tobie Noyer all added a basket apiece, while Marissa Moyle had 1 point from the line.
The Wolverines not only dominated the Tigers on the scoreboard, but their defense held the Tigers to a mere 10 shots from the field. Shooting a dismal 20 percent, the Tigers accumulated only two baskets and one free throw.
Unfortunately, the tables turned in the second period and the Wolverines struggled with shots, shooting a mere 3 for 19 for 6 points in fieldgoals and one free throw.
Meanwhile, the Tigers were only slightly more successful, scoring 9 points from the field. However, Wolverine fouls enabled the Tigers to add an additional 4 points to their credit and outscore the Lady Wolverines 13-7 and pull within three points at 21-18.
Ivy Morris was hot from behind the arc in the third quarter with a pair of 3-point buckets and Noyer and Erickson added 2 points apiece, but for a second quarter in a row, the Tigers outscored the Wolverines and pulled slightly closer to the Wolverines 31-29.
Offensive woes continued to plague the Wolverines into the final quarter, but despite a poor shooting percentage, both the Wolverines and the Tigers were equal from the field and both teams scored 6 points each.
However, the final quarter came down to fouls and free throws. The Tigers shot an impressive 86 percent from the charity stripe for 6 points, and although the Wolverines only managed 7 points in their 16 free throw opportunities, they still managed to maintain their lead and take the game 44-41.
The offensive success of the Wolverines was shared by nearly every Wolverine player, starting with Maddy Erickson, who led the Wolverines with 13 points. Andrea Bouvia was close behind with 11 points, while Ivy Morris added 6 points. Marissa Moyle had 5 points, followed by Tobie Noyer with 4 and Alex Bittinger with 2.
