Weiser girls’ beat Ontario, fall to McCall in soccer action

The Lady Wolverine soccer team notched one win and one loss to their 3-3 record last week on their home field.
On Tuesday the girls played a non-conference game against the Ontario Tigers and on Thursday were up against SRV conference rivals McCall-Donnelly.
Weiser came out with the win against Ontario, 5-2. Ontario made the first goal on a Weiser penalty.
Not to be outdone, one minute later, Alia Oarbeascoa dribbled the ball down the field and made a pass to Elle Svedin who struck with a high kick over Ontario’s goalie to tie the game.
Weiser’s Beth Philips quickly dribbled the ball down field and took the shot at goal to give Weiser the lead, 2-1.
Oarbeascoa’s shot hit the back of the goal at 38 minutes from an assist from Daniela Ixta. The half ended with Weiser ahead 3-1.
Ontario came out and with less than 5 minutes off the clock scored to make it a one-point game.
Philips was tripped which resulted in a penalty kick for Weiser. Macy Rodriguez took the shot and placed it over the keeper’s head, into the back of the net.
Weiser’s final point of the game came from a perfect pass from Svedin to Brooklynn Warner ending the game at 5-2.
McCall
Weiser played very aggressively against a strong McCall team on Thursday. Goalie Kristy Bake and her defenders kept McCall’s shots on goal from reaching the back of the net.
McCall struck first with a goal by Payton Lathrop. They again scored with a shot that got away from Weiser’s goalie and McCall followed up with a kick into the box. The half ended with McCall in the lead, 0-2.
With 13 minutes left in the game Weiser was able to work the ball downfield. Warner passed to Philips who attempted to take a shot but McCall’s goalie went down with the ball, but lost control of the ball and Philips followed through with the shot and goal.
“Defensively, the girls fought hard against McCall and they were playing as a team, they made two small mistakes in defense, which gave McCall their two goals which we corrected during half time, and that kept McCall from scoring during the second half. Offensively, we had several good chances, and because the girls never gave up we were able to score during the second half,” said Coach Trine Loenberg.
“The girls are playing well and are improving and learning with each game. Of course, I feel they still have a lot to learn, and I truly enjoy the opportunity I have to teach and instruct and watch them take that knowledge to improve in technique and skill. I’m very proud of them all,” said Loenberg.
