Bethany Walker of Weiser won her age group at the Elks Hoop Shoot district competition on Saturday and will move on to the state tournament in Grangeville on Feb. 8.
Walker, who is the daughter of Lorin and Chelsea Walker, competed in the 10-11-year- old age group at Nampa Christian High School.
She was the only Weiser contestant who placed first at the district event, although a few others came close.
There were five Elks lodges from Mountain Home to Caldwell to Weiser represented at the district Hoop Shoot event.
The competition requires nerves of steel and a keen eye on the basket. Hoop Shoot participants try to score as many free throws as they can in 25 attempts.
Weiser Elks member and Hoop Shoot organizer Darrel Krause said Walker was the best free-throw shooter out of the five girls in her age group at the district event.
“Her parents were tickled to death,” Krause said.
The first round of the annual Elks Hoop Shoot was held in December at Weiser Middle School and sponsored by Weiser’s Elks Lodge No. 1683.
A total of 22 local kids ages 8-13 registered for the first event. Those who won their age group moved on to the district competition. Winners at the state level will go to regionals.
The Elks Hoop Shoot National Finals will take place on April 18 in Chicago. The national boy and girl winners will win scholarships and other prizes.
The results from the district qualifier at Nampa for the Weiser participants are as follows:
Ages 8-9 girls – Ellie Woods, 2nd place.
 Ages 8-9 boys – Eric Freeman-Norris, 4th place.
Ages 10-11 girls – Bethany Walker, 1st place.
Ages 10-11 boys – Klete Cook, tied for 2nd place.
Ages 12-13 girls – Ellie Shirts, 3rd place.
Ages 12-13 boys – Josh Mizar, tied for 2nd place.
Krause said the local Elks Lodge will help with gas and lodging expenses for the local winner to travel to state.
