Weiser falls behind early in 58-33 loss to Baker City

The Lady Wolverines trekked to Oregon this past weekend to the home of the Baker Bulldogs for a non-conference pairing prior to heading into league play.
The Lady Wolverines had high hopes of adding to their 3-game winning streak but struggles offensively had the Wolverines trailing early and resulted in a 58-33 loss.
The Lady Wolverines were unable to find their groove in the first quarter, shooting only 1 for 12 from the field. The Bulldogs were only moderately better, shooting 4 for 14, but the 8 points from the field and 3 points via free throws gave the Bulldogs a 10-2 lead by the end of the first quarter.
The Wolverine struggles persisted through the remainder of the first half with Madison Phillips and Maddy Erickson finding success with a basket apiece. Mattie Shirts also added a basket and two free throws.
Unfortunately, the Bulldogs shot 70 percent from the field and were on fire from the line, outscoring the Wolverines 22-10 and expanding their lead by 20 points to 32-12.
The Lady Wolverines began to chip away at the Bulldog lead after the half with Erickson finding success with three baskets; one of which was from beyond the arc. Andrea Bouvia and Tobie Noyer each contributed a basket, while Shirts added a basket and a pair of free throws.
The Wolverines outscored the Bulldogs 15-11 during the period, but the Wolverines still trailed 43-25 with only 8 minutes remaining in the game.
Despite their best efforts, the Lady Wolverines were unable to get many good looks and although Erickson had 6 points and Shirts added 2, the Bulldogs continued to surge forward, scoring 15 points in the quarter and taking the game 58-33.
Maddy Erickson led the Wolverines with 15 points and 2 rebounds, followed by Mattie Shirts with a double-double, 12 points and 10 rebounds. Tobie Noyer had another strong night on the boards with 7 rebounds and 2 points, while Andrea Bouvia and Madison Phillips each had 2 points.
The junior varsity team had a close game, but came up short, losing 41-50 to the Bulldogs.  However, the frosh/soph team was successful in their 35-27 win.
The Lady Wolverines will have a busy 3-game schedule this week, competing on their home court Thursday, Jan. 9, against the Parma Panthers.  Games begin with the frosh/soph team at 4:30 p.m. at Weiser High School.
