Weiser drops match to Melba after early lead

The Lady Wolverines hosted the visiting Melba Mustangs last week in the presence of a full gymnasium of Weiser fans.
The Lady Wolverines came out strong in the first set, taking the lead immediately and maintaining their dominance throughout the set, never relinquishing their lead.
Reagan Doty recorded five kills during the set, while Grace Soulen had two kills and Jasi Yraguen, Whitney Cordes, Riley Warner and Ciana Fuller combined for an additional six kills during the set.
Ace serves by Macey Buescher and Fuller also added to the success of the Lady Wolverines during the 25-21 first set win.
The Lady Wolverines carried the momentum into the second set and jumped to an early 4-2 lead over the Mustangs. Service and defensive miscues allowed the Mustangs to overtake the Wolverines 7-6 off a bad Wolverine pass. The Wolverines were never able to regain the lead, dropping the set 18-24.
The third set had the Lady Wolverines playing out-of-sorts and kept the talented team from being able to run a string of positive plays together.
Trailing from the beginning of the set, the Wolverines were never able to overtake the Mustangs on the scoreboard despite kills by Doty, Soulen and Buescher, and lost the third set 16-25.
The Wolverines faced a critical situation in the fourth set, trailing 2-1 in the match, and had to have a good showing to prevent the Mustangs from taking the match.
Communication, coverage and service errors continued to plague the struggling squad. The Mustangs took an early and commanding 3-9 lead, but a free ball to the Mustangs’ back court by Buescher started a positive scoring surge for the Wolverines.
A dump kill from Ivy Morris and an ace serve from Doty pulled the Wolverines within 2-points, 9-11.
The Wolverines capitalized on a series of errors by the Mustangs to pull ahead 12-11 for their first lead of the set, and kills by both Jade Simonson and Doty put the Wolverines up 15-13.
Unfortunately, accuracy difficulties of the previous two sets again reared their ugly heads, and the Mustangs took full advantage and took a 19-17 lead.
Following a timeout discussion by Coach Lindsay Grant, the Lady Wolverines came out of the break with markedly more intensity.  The Wolverines battled hard for every ball during the waning moments of the fourth set, but came up short, losing the set 23-25 and the match 1-3.
