Weiser drops conference game to Homedale 16-6

Weiser opened up conference play Tuesday, March 19, at Homedale. The Wolverines started out with bats moving and scored three runs in the first inning.
Logan Wood had a base hit to second to get on first, then stole second. Kooper von Brethorst advanced him to third on a bunt that he beat out to get on base. Jayden Mink took his turn with a base hit to center field, scoring Wood. Brody von Brethorst hit a solid double on a hard ground ball that went out to right field and scored both Kooper and Jayden.  Nathan McDaniel received the start on the mound for the Wolverines.
Homedale answered in the first inning with two runs of their own scoring, but Weiser still had the lead. Tyrel Barnett had a hit over center field for a triple and a solid RBI single by Logan Wood scored Barnett.
McDaniel had a great inning on the mound when the Trojans went to bat. He recorded two strikeouts and a pop up to end the inning.
In the third inning, Weiser bats just couldn’t quite muster the strength to add to the score, but Homedale definitely answered. After a base hit, Homedale scored a deep home run over the fence.  Homedale would bring their score to six runs by the end of the third inning on some solid hitting and forced a changing of the pitcher to Ray Calley.
Weiser batters went three up, three down at the top of the fourth inning, while Homedale added two more runs on a few more solid hits.
In the top of the fifth, Weiser got the bats going again with a double from Jayden Mink and a walk by Brody von Brethorst. Mink was picked off at second base, and then Ray Calley hit a line drive to centerfield scoring Brody von Brethorst and Calley reached second base. Jarret Mink hit a base hit single to the shortstop, scoring Calley, but the offense ended there for the inning.
Ray Calley faced seven batters during the bottom of the fifth inning, seeing some errors in the field and some good offense by Homedale. They added four more to their tally. Kooper von Brethorst had a single in the sixth, but that was all that the bats could produce.
Jayden Mink came in during the sixth inning to try to stop some of the Homedale offense, but the damage was done. A hard-hit ball with batters on scored two more runs for Homedale and ended the game with a score of 16-6 Homedale.
Weiser had 28 at bats against Homedale and scored 6 runs off of 12 hits.  They recorded 6 RBIs, 2 walks, and 7 strikeouts for the day.
Weiser coach Bowe von Brethorst was pleased with the approach in the batter’s box but the team needs to work on getting the ball in play.
“We were better prepared to hit today and started out really strong. We have the ability to be a strong ball club when we put the bat on the ball and get it in play. One thing that we need to get to work on is moving forward. We tend to replay that last at bat or play in our heads instead of focusing on the next at bat or play.  We need to get better at that,” the coach said.
Weiser will have most of spring break off and will play in a tournament during the weekend of March 29-30.
