The Weiser varsity girls cross country runners saved their best times for the last race of the year.
A number of Wolverines posted personal records at the IHSAA XC Championships on Saturday at the Portneuf Wellness Complex at Pocatello. There was a field of 79 girls competing in the 3A varsity division.
Eight WHS girls traveled to Pocatello to race in the state championships. The team included Ellie Walker, Kiearra Hoobery, Libbie Rynearson, Emily Abramson, Stephanie Bodett, Ellie Eames, Ashlyn Walker and Taylor Wiles (alternate).
“A couple of girls recorded all-time PR (personal record) times, and a couple more got season best times. So they certainly put it all out there,” Weiser coach Scott Hale said.
“I am definitely proud of them. And with most of them being sophomores, we should have more of the same for at least a couple years.”
The course in Pocatello was mostly flat and grass, with some hills and sand and dirt portions. Weather conditions were great for running. Saturday was sunny and a bit on the chilly side in eastern Idaho, but not overly cold, Hale said.
In team scores, the varsity girls from Sugar-Salem took first place in the 3A division, followed by Timberlake in second and Filer in third place. The Weiser girls placed 10th.
For Weiser, sophomore Kiearra Hoobery set the pace for the Wolverines with a time of 22:40.87 – a personal record for her. The race at state was the first time this season she has run 5,000 meters in under 23 minutes.
Freshman Stephanie Bodett ran her season-best race and also set a personal record with a time of 24:34.1. Her finish at state was 22 seconds faster than the time she posted at the SRV District meet.
Sophomore Ashlyn Walker posted a season-best time of 25:52.2. Her finish at state was 33 seconds faster than the time she clocked at the district meet.
Other Weiser finishers at state and their times included senior Ellie Walker (23:22.77), Libbie Rynearson (24:34.69), Emily Abramson (25:24.92) and Ellie Eames (26:21.62).
The fastest girl in the state among 3A schools was Sugar-Salem’s Sarenady Price, who blazed the 5,000-meter course in a time of 19:29.10. Teammate Jaresa Jackson finished second with a time of 19:40.97. Emma Hillam, a sophomore from Fruitland, placed third with a time of 19:50.30.
The Weiser varsity boys, both individually and as a team, missed the cut to qualify for state at the SRV District meet on Oct. 22.
The Weiser varsity girls qualified for state by placing second at the SRV District meet at McCain Middle School in Payette.
The Sugar-Salem boys also won the 3A state title as a team. Gooding placed second and Snake River was third.
Timberlake’s Logan Hunt was the only 3A runner to run a sub-16 minute time on the course out of a field of 80 competitors.
Hunt won the boys race with a time of 15:48.36. Sugar-Salem’s Kaysen Klingler was second with a time of 16:14.89 and Gooding’s Owen Rogers was third with a time of 16:21.50.
