Weiser cheerleaders sweep district

Once again, Weiser cheerleaders proved that Weiser spirit and talent is among the best earning their 13th straight District Championship making it a baker’s dozen for the Wolverines. The squad will head to state on Friday, March 19 at the Ford Idaho Center.
Weiser cheerleaders competed in four events: Pom routine, sideline cheer, show cheer and stunt group. Homedale and Fruitland also competed in the 3A division with Homedale qualifying for state behind Weiser in sideline.
Just as they did for their first competition, TVCI, the Wolverines had to submit their routines through video recordings. Although most high school sports and activities have been able to take place live, both of the cheer competitions were virtual competitions. Instead of being able to compete in person in front of the judges and audience live, each team had to record their routines and send them into the judges.
Coach Jennifer Weldon once again emphasized that the team was grateful for the talents and efforts of  Mike and Sheleigh Turner, who were able to assist with the recording process for the district performances.
The Turners have gained invaluable experience recording the choir concerts this year and Mike was able to use his newly gained expertise and equipment to help the cheerleaders record each of the performances for the judges.
Weldon shared that this district competition means a lot to the team because it has been a difficult year for the athletes and coaches.
Creating video of the routine brought both new challenges and rewards. The rewarding part has been watching the team rise up to the challenge and work hard even when they weren’t sure they would get a season.
The Wolverines have always practiced their routines on a small floor space, working with a maximum of four mats and only getting to put their routines onto full mats at competition. In order to compete, the Wolverines had to get a full floor of nine mats.
Weldon shared that the support of the Weiser School District to get the mats that allowed them to record in the high school gym made a world of difference and the team is very grateful for the difference it made.
As they prepare for state, it will be all about continuing to work on transitions and sharpness of movements, sharpening the precision of the skills they have already shown on the mat. The team is looking forward to state not only because they are excited to compete at the state level, but also because state will be the only live performance of the season.
“I am incredibly excited for state. It will be our only in person competition this year. I love watching competitive cheer; I love watching girls achieve goals and develop new skills. Long live Weiser cheer,” Weldon said.
Weiser cheerleaders will have the chance to compete for first place in each of their events, pom, sideline, and all-girl show. The state champions will be chosen based on the top placement point earners from the three team events.
In addition to the team events, Weiser also had a stunt group qualify for the state tournament. Tyra Ramirez, Reagan Doty, Alyssa Olvera, Alexandra Froshiesar and Alexa Lundstrum will perform a one minute routine featuring a showcase of some of the most difficult stunts hoping for the title of top 3A all girl stunt group.
