Weiser battles Fruitland in four-set match

The Lady Wolverines traveled to the home of the Lady Grizzlies last week with plans for a bit of redemption from their previous home loss.
The Lady Wolverines were incredibly close so many times throughout the match, but simply could not pull out the win, dropping the match in four sets, 25-23, 24-26, 23-25 and 18-25.
The Lady Wolverines came out in the first set kind of sluggish, and fell behind 0-3 on errors. Sara Lundberg stopped the Grizzlies’ scoring with a kill, and Macy Moore followed her up with an ace serve.
The Wolverines tied the set 3-3, but again faltered and allowed the Grizzlies to jump into a 5-8 lead.  Grace Soulen slammed down a kill and Reagan Doty found a hole in the Grizzlies’ defense in center court and strategically placed a lovely tip into the gap.
The Wolverines came up with some amazing digs against the hard-hitting Grizzlies, and with a kill by Macy Beusher, the Wolverines again tied the set 9-9. The Lady Wolverines stepped up their play and found an extra dose of scrappiness throughout the remainder of the first set.
The Wolverines pulled ahead 13-10, but allowed the Grizzlies to recover and take an 18-14 lead over the Wolverines. Lundberg added another kill to her tally and in turn rejuvenated her teammates. A Beuscher ace, a kill by Lundberg and a pair of kills by Soulen tied the set 20-20.
The two teams traded the lead momentarily, but Doty, with what has become her signature move, a sneaky tip to the center of the defense, read the Grizzlies’ overfed pass and made them pay for it to take a 23-21 lead. An error by the Grizzlies and a Lundberg kill capped the set in favor of the Wolverines 25-23.
Set No. 2 began much the same, with the Wolverines falling behind 0-5. The Lady Wolverines seemed out of sorts and disorganized for some time in the second set before they were able to regroup and get rolling offensively.
Trailing 2-7, Lundberg found her mark with a kill, and Soulen followed suit to pull within four points at 4-8.  However, the energy was short-lived and the Grizzlies capitalized on every scoring opportunity and took a commanding 12-5 lead.
Another Doty kill in the center and a kill by Lundberg gave the Wolverines a bit of forward momentum. Finally, trailing by 8-points (16-8), the Wolverines were able to find some solid footing that was started by a kill by LynnZ Rasmussen.  Beuscher began to serve for the Wolverines, and with the help of some intense Wolverine blocking, Beuscher pulled the Wolverines to within 1-point at 15-16.  The Wolverines worked hard to keep from digging themselves another scoring hole, staying within two points throughout the remainder of the set, but tied 24-24, the Wolverines ran out of time and allowed a Grizzlies kill and suffered an error to lose the second set 24-26.
A trend of falling behind early on in the sets was beginning to show for the Wolverines, and once again they found themselves trailing 0-4 in the third set before a Grizzlies service error gave the Wolverines the opportunity that they needed.
With Beuscher behind the service line, Lundberg contributed a pair of kills to help bridge the scoring gap to 7-8. There were some outstanding rallies throughout the set, and Beuscher made a beautiful pancake save, but the Wolverines couldn’t keep their momentum until the 12-17 mark.
Lundberg recorded a kill cross-court and followed it up with a pair of aces, and Soulen added a kill. Lundberg served up 6 points and pulled the Wolverines even at 17-17.  Neither team was able to get a solid hold on the set, trading point-for-point to the very end. However a pair of back-to-back stuff blocks by the Grizzlies enabled them to take the set 25-23.
The Lady Wolverines found themselves in a precarious position going into what could be the final set of the match, and again they started slow again, falling behind 0-4. Lundberg and Rasmussen collaborated on the block of a tip by the Grizzlies, and Lundberg hit a kill down the line, but the Wolverines couldn’t find their groove, and despite some very scrappy play, any positive movement on their side of the scoreboard was quickly countered by the Grizzlies, and the Grizzlies took the set 25-18 and the match 3-1.
