Video by Weiser High School senior wins ‘Battle of the Fans’ contest

Everyone who lives in Weiser knows that “It’s a Great Day to Be a Wolverine,” and the Wolverines know that Weiser has the best fans and support.
Now, thanks to the efforts of 2020 graduate Merci Vargas, Weiser High School will  have a banner proving that the Wolverines have the best spirit in Idaho – proving it by winning the IHSAA  “Battle of the Fans” video competition.
Vargas shared that being a part of the yearbook has taught her so much more than how to create a picture and edit a photo or video. It’s taught her to step outside her comfort zone, responsibility to the school community, and time management from attending all the important events.
Vargas loves that with a yearbook, you can capture memories forever to honor the four short years you have together.
Vargas gives a lot of the credit to her love of yearbook to the yearbook adviser Mrs. Shirts. She works hard to show the staff how much she cares and makes the yearbook class amazing.
Vargas, who has also been a yearbook editor for three years, worked on this year’s yearbook even after graduating early in December and filmed and edited the video for the competition.
Although the credit for the excitement and spirit in the video goes to all the students at WHS, the behind the scenes filming, editing, creating and adding music goes to Vargas.
This is the second year of the Battle of the Fans competition sponsored by the Idaho High School Activities Association student advisory council. Twelve schools entered the competition and were divided into large and small schools.
Up against Weiser in the small school division were the Bear Lake Bears, the Gooding Senators, the Timberlake Tigers and Valley Vikings.
To win, Weiser had to show in just 90 seconds why the Wolverines have the best spirit at all the games. While  Billie Tanner and Melodee Cathey helped film the spirited fans, Vargas edited the final masterpiece.
Vargas shared that she thinks Weiser won for many reasons. WHS is more than just going to school and learning. The teachers care about the students and the students care about each other.
“We don’t care about the score on the board, or how far we have to travel. We only care about the kids on the field, mat and court.” Vargas said.
Vargas also shared that the entire student body and every athlete knows that Weiser has the best fans not only because of the kids in the student sections but because of all the parents, families, and friends from the community.
The video features fellow class of 2020 seniors Grace Soulen, Bentley Weldon, Brady Beam, and Tim Reed, video of pep assemblies and the cheerleaders and Proud Sound pep band during the basketball games, and of course the fans in the student section at the basketball game.
Weiser is known for having the loudest student section in the Snake River Valley. No matter the score, the Wolverines show that not only are they the loudest, they show that they are also the proudest.
No matter who we’re playing or where the game is at, Wolverine’s show up to support in masses. Whether winning or losing they are always cheering the loudest while still respecting the competition, because as the end of the video shares:
“Being a Wolverine is more than just being a student at Weiser High School. It’s about being a friend and a part of the family.”
Although the video is short, the big pride that is part of the Wolverine Way is clear. The video can be seen on Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ROrAFJadei0.
