There is lots of traffic on city streets during harvest

By:
Mayor Diana Thomas
Harvest time is here and the trucks are rolling.  Many times, the trucks appear to be speeding along the streets but are actually going the speed limit.
Their size and load can cause concerns as they drive by. However, sometimes the drivers are being reminded by our law enforcement to watch their speed and the possibility of overweight.
We appreciate our agricultural roots but also need to protect our citizens.  We all need to be reminded to slow down around our schools and in the residential areas.  Let’s work together to keep our streets safe.
Along this same line is the ongoing concern about the traffic around Park School.  We are receiving complaints from the school and parents about unsafe practices of parents picking up and dropping off their students.  Please remember to slow down and follow the traffic rules.
The school district has developed a traffic plan to keep the students safe crossing the streets and entering and leaving the school area and have crossing guards to help.  Please follow these traffic laws and rules and listen to the guards to ensure the safety of your and others children.
The city will continue to work with the school administration to cut down on these concerns and this may require citations to be given to parents to stop the infractions.
The needed rain we are receiving this week will slow down some of the city projects this week but will certainly help the fire concerns.
We expect to have the burn ban removed by the end of this week.  Weiser City Fire and Rescue  and Weiser Area Rural Fire District try to coordinate efforts on this schedule.
Remember, there is an open house at Weiser rural this Wednesday and city fire next Wednesday in honor of Fire Prevention Month.
Alley clean-up is expected to start this week on the east side of Highway 95.  The weather will, of course, dictate how this goes.
Please remember alley clean-up is for yard and garden debris which should be placed in the alley away from the garbage cans. If you do not have an alley, place it along side the curb in the front of your house.  Leaf pickup will come later.
Items such as mattresses and furniture are not part of alley clean-up. Please take those to the dump or if they are usable contact Love, INC, WICAP or ROSE Advocates.
Twice-a-week pick up of garbage is expected to continue through the month of October.
Adopt-a-trucks are also still available after business hours and on the weekend.  Contact the city office for reservations and more information regarding use.
Weiser High School Homecoming will take place on Friday, Oct. 19 with the regular scheduled events. Our opponent will be the Homedale Trojans, so come out for the parade and come out Friday night to support our Wolverine football team.
The rest of the fall sports at the high school are winding down so get out and support our cross-country runners, soccer and volleyball teams as well.  Check local media for the schedules and cheer them on in league and district competition.
We have a great group of volunteers that work with our WPD to oversee our community called the Citizens On Patrol or C.O.P.s. They help by providing escorts for various events, doing door checks for businesses and traffic control at many events in the community.
They are looking for more volunteers to help out. If you are interested contact the WPD at 208-414-2244.
There are many volunteer opportunities in Weiser if you are looking to put your extra time to a great use.  This is one thing that makes our community so special.
