There are lots to be thankful for; a furry friend found and the people of Weiser

This last week, I have been stuck at home on a home project of stripping, sanding, and refinishing one of the floors in my 1910 house. If you have ever taken on one of these projects, you will know how tedious, time-consuming, and dusty a job this is.
In the middle of this, Cathy got me out of the house Saturday afternoon for a hike. We went to Celebration Park south of Melba along the Snake River. The area is strewn with “Melon Pebbles” –  large boulders believed to be washed there from the Bonneville Flood about 15,000 years ago.
From there we hiked along the river for a ways, then up to Halverson Lake, a small but beautiful lake within a half mile of the river.  I’ve lived in this area most of my life and had no idea there was a lake south of Melba.
In the middle of a boring project and a pandemic that doesn’t allow us to get out and get together with people, going for a hike and making a new discovery was a pleasant way to spend an afternoon.
Also, this week, I received an email from a member of our community that I wanted to share:
“I just want to give a shout out to Chuck Green. His title by the way, Code Enforcement Officer, does not reflect what an amazing human being and friend he is to all in this community. He does his job with a smile and he empathizes with the person on the other end of the phone who is concerned about losing a four-legged family member. Trust me, I was THAT person tonight! I didn’t realize that he has a Facebook page and gives out his number for those who might find or need to find a pet or a home. During the holidays, is a great time to be thankful for all we have here in Weiser, Idaho. I am just so grateful for Chuck Green and wanted to share this with you as well.”
I had the chance to talk to the person who wrote this. Being reunited with her pet also involved friends knowing her dog was missing and other friends knowing someone trying to find the owner of a lost dog. In other words, being part of a community.
Those of us who work with Chuck, know what a good job he does. It is good to know that those of you in the community know it as well.
As for community events, a group of individuals are planning for a car cruise on Dec. 12 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. to look at Christmas lights. Santa plans to be at the Weiser High School parking lot to give treats to children in their cars.
Following this, at 8:30 p.m. the city’s firemen will be setting off fireworks in Memorial Park. The plan is to have cars park diagonally around the perimeter to allow the maximum number to be able to see the event from their vehicles. More details will be coming as we get closer to Dec. 12.
Since this week is Thanksgiving, as we were hiking, I couldn’t help but think of things I was thankful for.
This being 2020, it can be very easy to slip into thinking about all of the things not to be thankful for, but it is important to remember the things where we can.
So, I want to share with you some of the things on my list:
I am thankful for the caring, sharing, and supportive people of this community.
I am thankful for the way people find ways to bring out the best in each other.
I am thankful for the privilege to work with the people of Weiser and the City employees to make this a great place to live, work, and play.
In other words, I am thankful for the privilege to serve you as your mayor.
Well, that’s it for this week. May you have a wonderful and Happy Thanksgiving.
