A high-speed pursuit that started near Midvale on U.S. Highway 95, continued through Weiser and reached 100 miles per hour as the suspect drove south ended when multiple law enforcement agencies finally stopped the driver in Malheur County.
The driver, John Stramaglia, 20, of Lewiston, was arrested without incident outside of Ontario, Ore. He was jailed in Malheur County on charges of felony eluding law enforcement and an outstanding Idaho felony warrant.
The chase started at about 6:24 p.m. when a sheriff’s deputy tried to pull Stramaglia over near Midvale. The driver took off south on Highway 95 toward Weiser at speeds that reached 100 mph, according to a news release from the Washington County Sheriff’s Office.
Weiser police set up spike strips north of Weiser in an effort to stop the southbound vehicle. The spike strips damaged the tire on the driver’s side. The vehicle turned on to Indianhead Road, where a deputy attempted to get in front of the vehicle. The suspect made a sharp turn toward the deputy, hitting the front of the patrol car.
The suspect traveled through Weiser toward Oregon. As the vehicle crossed the state line, a WPD officer tried to get in front of the vehicle. The suspect struck the front passenger side of the patrol car and continued into Oregon on Highway 201.
Both the Oregon State Police and the Malheur County Sheriff’s Department joined the pursuit. Another set of spike strips were deployed near Stanton Boulevard and Highway 201. The right rear tire on the suspect’s vehicle was damaged. The pursuit continued toward Ontario, Ore.
The suspect vehicle became disabled outside of Ontario, Ore., and came to a stop. The driver and a passenger were taken into custody without further incident. The passenger was released and Stramaglia was arrested and transported to the Malheur County Jail, authorities said.
