Students head back to the classroom

Students in Washington County are going back to school this week and next to start the 2019-20 school year.
Although temperatures of 90-plus degrees this week suggest summer isn’t over, students in the Weiser School District were back in classrooms on Wednesday for a short first week.
In Midvale, students in grades 6-12 started on Monday and school began for grades K-5 on Wednesday. Teachers were back in schools as of Aug. 15.

Schools in Cambridge will start the new school year on Monday, Aug. 26. All students in K-12 will have an early release of 1 p.m. on Monday.
Weiser superintendent Wade Wilson said it’s still too early to determine exact enrollment numbers.
Weiser schools have enrolled new students over the past couple of weeks, but the district will not know how many students have left the district until school starts.
The preliminary numbers indicate Pioneer Elementary School and Park Intermediate School could be down a little. That is based on the number of students who registered for kindergarten last spring as well as the number of fifth grade students who were moving to sixth grade.
The middle school numbers are down slightly but still look solid, Wilson said. There appears to be enrollment growth at the high school this year based on the number of seniors who graduated and the number of eighth grade students moving up to the high school. As of last week, 17 new students registered at the high school.
Wilson said he has asked administrators at each school to do a student count on the fourth full day of classes on Monday, Aug. 26, and report the numbers.
